My MR Y-Wing Rework/Repaint Showoff

Hi guys, got this MR Y wing from our own S. Neisen and he had already removed the piping on the dorsal of the ship before he decided to sell it. I wanted to model the Y wing with the "T" in the piping that is primarily copper tubing. So I set to work repriming and repainting the base colors first, added the new pipe work and then assembled and did the final color scheme and weathering this morning. I just finished her and snapped a few pics to share. Peace,

Dave :)

Your paint work deserves bigger photos judging by the superb looking bottom photo.

Thanks guys, I'll replace the pics with the larger version on the other ones. I only hope my escape pod will turn out as nice as the Y did. Of course a lot of thanks has to go to Steve N. :)

Dave

Edit: added a couple new angles too. :)

It is SO refreshing to see these things painted properly. THe MR paint job just hurts to look at sorry MR guys but its true)...

Yeah, the weathering job MR did on the Y is what has put me off of buying one all this time........until now. I finally decided to bite the bullet, get an airbrush and fix it. So I got the darkly weathered MR Y and tried my hand at learning to airbrush. With a dual action brush in your hands, anyone could learn to do a fine job. I'm not calling what I did a fine job, but it's better than what MR's folks did. They always lay down on the black weathering apparently. A very little, goes a long long way.

Very nice job, wish I had the guts to do something like that..

You did a great job.

I recently saw a real Y Wing here at the LA event and yours looks close.

Perhaps - a little more weathering on the side pods. I maybe able to post some pictures.

I'd love to see pics of the same model of the Y........the one with copper tubing all over it and the extra panel of yellow on the nose. Of course, I'd love to see any screen used Ywing model for that matter. :) As high resolution as you have would be great.

Oh - BTW - Thank you for posting good photos.

I've seen so many ships on this board where the flash washes everything out and you can't even tell what a good job someone did..

Thanks man, a great friend of mine once advised me to take all my shots out of doors on a partly cloudy day without a flash. It looks in person as it looks in these photos. :)

REALLY nice work there Dave.
I love the copper pipe version with the extra yellow panel on the front. Hard to believe that this is your first airbrushed prop - you make it look so easy.

Well im looking at the ref pics in the Tech Journal right now, and i have to say....great job :thumbsup
Youve about captured this one buddy, ive never found many other pics of this bird except in the Tech Journal and it all matches up very nicely, id leave the engines alone too, this version isnt so heavily weathered.
Id maybe repaint the R2 to really get the full effect.
Maybe we should start a repainted Y thread, there seems to be a hell of a lot of them out there :lol

Ralphee, I agree, less weathering overall. I noticed that some of the pics are a bit light in the journals etc....but still there is less weathering than the version MR tried to duplicate. IT did have weathering but a bit more specific. I do plan to repaint R2 or find a more appropriate R2 unit. This one is certainly more realistic than what was used.........the real prop Y-wing R2 didn't have the right number of pie wedges I noticed. Not sure how I'll approach that. I may just go with what I have as it does look nice. Almost like the R2 had to be upgraded on the same ole bird........ya know?

Dave :)
