My Mr Fusion Project

I have been working on this for a while and am ready to make a start. Mr Fusion is one of those uber cool props that every BTTF fan wants to have in their collection. Even though Krupps 223(?) coffee grinders can be found on eBay, I decided to make the whole thing from scratch. I am not sure how this will pan out, but feel free to comment anyway.

So my project so far will be just the coffee grinder and a base. I am not (at this stage anyway) going to make the black part and as a result, have not included the hinge on my Mr Fusion.

My first render, so please be kind :p This was drawn in the free version of Sketch Up and then an extension file was used to allow exports as either DXF (which I will use for laser cut parts) and STL which is show in the image.

So basically, I have sliced Mr Fusion apart and will get all the layers laser cut, then I will glue (using Weldon 3) to make the 3D shape. Because all the curves surfaces are polygons (unless someone has a link to another extension file that allows true circles and arcs) the surface will need to be bogged and sanded. Fun times ahead.

Hey cavx, I'm still fairly new, but I have done a lot of reading on here, and seen your name pop up a fair few times :) Looks like a cool project. This looks like a situation where a 3D printer would come in handy. We have a laser cutter where i work, have just started getting to grips with, fairly basic at the moment. Would love to try and make one of these. Have been looking at the coffee grinders on ebay, but can't brig myself to spend that much on one. Please keep us updated on your progress. Cheers.

All the Krupps coffee grinders I have found on eBay are priced well into the $200 range (plus shipping) and why I am going this route. Basically I get the stand as well for less than the cost of buying a used coffee grinder that I have to mod. If this technique works out they way I hope it will, I will be able to use it to make parts for the the new NIKE Tube Bag as well.

Yeah, they are expensive, and i have recently just spent a fair bit of money on my bttf collection :rolleyes so can't justify it at the moment. Would like to see your work on the nike tube bag, please post if/when you start that :)

My BTTF2 Tube Bag thread can be found HERE. The project came out pretty good, but is not correct because the lids are hinged and the handles are not recessed. I was planning on a Vac Form version, but looking into different things now. I do want to make a "usable" bag with lids that are more correct than I have now.

I have a Krups grinder that I'm making into a Mr Fusion. If you need any measurements LMK. I always wondered why no one made these as the body is pretty basic. For the prop none of the inside grinder workings are needed.

Search on different countries in ebay to find reasonably priced 223 models. I have gotten two sub $70 grinders.

DSC05081.JPGHere is another top view. I got mine white but because of it's age it had a little bit of yellow fading/staining that occurs with plastic parts. So I ended up painting mine white again. I was going to apply the Mr Fusion decals then paint it one last time with clear coat but it got too cold in the garage.

DSC05085.JPGHere's the window that the Mr Fusion decal goes on. Some people paint it black on the inside but I saw a version where they had LED lights where it glowed so that's what I'm going with.

Yeah I heard that Germany eBay can get one from about 40 (not sure of that was Euros or Dollars). The issue is the freight to AU.

Thanks for posting these. Always good to have more reference shots.

Yes, on german eBay you can get them the cheapest, since most sellers here don't know it's from BTTF. I bought my two grinders for about 30 Euros each. Shipping included.

I'd try 2000 grit wet and dry the polish it up with T-cut. You might even get the logo off just by using a fine compound car polish.

Since I painted mine to give a more uniform overall white color I just used sandpaper. If your plastic is not yellowed/aged I've heard of people using mineral spirits and a rag and it supposedly will rub off... with a lot of elbow grease.

How old are these units? I'd be careful when sanding them down. Also be careful as to what liquids you use too. My wife has a bottle of what seems to be a car pollish (safe to use on 2PAK) that she uses on her stormtrooper armour. It removes marks from the ABS and gives it a nice shine. Maybe something like that could work.

That would be Novus that your wife uses. Its a three stage plastic polish. Sanding down plastic would be totally safe if 2000 grit was used and then polished after. Something like Novus will work but it will take quite some time to remove the Krups logo as its not a very harsh compound.

She uses Meguiar's PlastX as apparently Novas is not available here.

Got the quote back from the laser cutter for my project and it is a go. Hopefully I will have some plastic in a few days.
