My First Predator Costume Build.

Hi
I am Ulrik, from Sweden (I apologize in advance for the incorrect english that will occur from time to time), and this is my first build. I am 32 years old and have done some props, sculpts and moulds , make-up jobs during Halloween season, and so on. Some months ago I started using Pepakura and made my first biohelmet with resin and bondo, and after that the thought of making a whole suit started to grow back on me, having had those kind of thought a couple of years ago when I first found out about the hunters lair. Time since then has been spent reading, wathing movies, collection materials, tools, and fixing up a good work space (good thing to have an understanding girlfriend...). Also doung some other experiments with Pepakura and some other stuff, just to get to now how the materials work. So, this post has taken me a while to get to, but now, it is on! I will try to update as often as I can. For more instant updates you can always follow me on my Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/ManiacFx.

The progres so far:

1. A tape dummy has been made. This turned out quit good in the end. When we started out we did not use as much tape as we should have, making the dummy too "sloppy". One good thing though, was the use of thin long underwear covered with plastic wrap. This made the dummy real smooth, and REALLY easy to get out of, and not damaging the underwear. Plastic wrap is the tinh, I tell you! I then made a simple PVC skeleton and stuffed the dummy with old issues of Previews. Since we had not used that mush tape and the dummy was kind of floppy, I wrapped some more plastic wrap and duct tape on it. And it turned out really good.

2. I have tried a bunch of diffrent suits to build on, including Mr I, and a lycra suit, but all failed since I am a quite big guy, and everything was too damn small. In the end I settled for plain black thights and a black long sleeved shirt, that is now sitting on the dummy. looks good so far, and I will install a zipper in the back. Legs and arms will be 3/4 since shins and forarms will be covered with the gauntlets. I don't know though if I should keep it a 2-piece suit or sew the pieces together... what are the benefits and disadavantages of both? Any help would mean a lot to me. If making a 2-piece, how do I keep the pieces togehter and making a nice edge between them? Please post link to examples of suits made in both ways!
When this is decided, muscles will be added

3. I have used mainly the armor templates made by Vinman (thank you very much!), and so far I have made the shoulder bells. I used 6 mm foamies since I want it light weight, and I enjoy this material very much. Maybe they are a little to thick. I only had access to 2 and 6 mm at the time since foamis are not hat easy to come by in Sweden, and chose the thicker one for this piece. I now have found a good retailer in Sweden that offers great foamies in various sizes and with a good price, but of course, they have to special order most of it, and it will take some time. So I will stock upp on 2, 3, 4 and 6 mm foamies in sizes of 70x50 cm. Great for the armor I think.

And that is where I am right now. With summer vacation coming up I am hoping to get all my materials togehter and then I will lock myself in my room and spend many, many hours with my suit.

The first build is always exciting. Im sure it will be an amazing. It is an addictive hobby. Good luck man.

Ok, so here are some updates. I have made a 1-piece suit out of a longsleeve shirt and a pair of thights. Got to use the sweing machine, which was like 20 years ago, but it went OK. Also, my foamies have arrived and I have continued the work on the leg armor. I found some circular wooden buttons that I used to make a Hyrulian shield from Zelda a couple of months ago, and I thought I might use them in my armor to add detail and make it more personal.

Next thing up will be to cover the suit in latex and work on the muscles with cotton bandages which I think will work very well, both to add depth and texture. Also the leg armor will be finished quite soon so I can seal the foam and prime paint them, and then on to the next piece of armor.

Oh, almost forgot. I had some PET plastic laying around, so I did a test with the blades. Since the picture was taken I have worked some more on it and it looks really good. I had another piece of plastic for blade #2, but this broke while cutting... damn. Need to find another piece, or maybe if I make a mould out of the first one and cast future blades out of that.

So, time for an update! The leg armor is now sealed and painted black. I will do the metallic paint when all armor parts are ready. I think that will make it easier to amke them look as parts of a whole.

Also started working on the groin flap. Here it is sealed and ready to be primed. I will do that as soon as I have finished the butt flap as well. There were some roughness and holes that needed to be covered. I got a tips from a prop maker who uses acrylic paste (the stuff you use to seal windows with) when he makes costumes out of foam mats. This stuff is great for covering seams, holes, and so on. Best part is that you blend with water. Just use a sponge and blend, and no sanding is needed. Great stuff !!! And cheap to. One bottle was like $1.50, and that will go a long way.
I will try to use this as sealing agent instead of PVA on a test piece in the future. Maybe it will work...

And as for the suit. I did the muscles using polyester fibres Stuff called Soffban, and is used as padding bandaged. First try made the abs look like a freaking turtle... More fibres were added and finally it started to look like something. I added some fibres on the arms, shoulders and upper back for texture. I thought about adding muscles to those places as well, but no... I have already made my templates for the body armor, and I'm sure adding more muscles would make it to small. Next suit I will know how to make it better from the start. So far I'm not too happy with how this turned out. The drying of the latex made the abs change little in shape and I did not now how much to add and so on... but as I first suit it will suffice. Next time I know how to do it right!
On this pic I have covered front torso with pros aide and then air brushed a base coat, for the second time since the first coat cracked. Probably because I used way to little pros aide when dabbing it on with a sponge. Second time I just painted it on, left to dry but still tacky, then air brush.

Well, there you go. Some updates. If you want closer updates, check out https://www.facebook.com/ManiacFx Now I need to get to Gothenburg and buy some more FW ink, and probably some other nice things. Also need to think about my paint scheme for the skin...
Btw, has anyone used a spray can instead of an air brush while doing the base coat? I think Liquitex and Montana make their spray paint from acrylics instead of alkyd... would that work? I guess it would save some time, and money.

Usually cracking is caused by applying too much paint.  I usually do 4-5 layers, building it up to an even color.  Pros-aide shouldn't cause paint to crack.  What are you thinning your inks with?  It's my experience that that can make a difference as well.  First time painting I used distilled water, but after some of the more experienced painters here suggested 99% isopropyl I started using that and much prefer it over the water.

I am thinning with a small amount of isopropyl. You might be right, but I'm not sure. I don't think that I used that much paint the first time. So I think it was rather the lack of pros aide which had been dabbed on really sparingly. Anyway, It looks better now, after a second coat.

Been a while since last update, but here it is.

The suit has been painted, and is almost ready. Still need some small adjustments, but nothing major since most of it will be covered with armor. I have lots of notes with "do and dont's" for my next suit. Don't have a very recent picture right now though...

About the armor; all the pieces that are done have been painted today. It worked really well to use acrylic paste to fill out small gaps and make the pieces hold together, Also it bonded easy with the water thinned PVA used to seal the foam. This part was most time consuming. You know about it... seal, let dry, seal, let dry... and so on for about 10-15 layers. All done it was primed and then sprayed black. Some dry brushing later the finished pieces are almost done.Still need some weathering, but I wait until all the pices are ready.

Next steps are to start with the chest piece and biceps, and find a good belt to attach the flaps and thigh armor on. Dont really know how to do that yet... Thinking of using velcro...hm, any suggestions?

Damn... has it really been so long since I updated this? I guess that is the worst thing with Facebook, you just post everything there and forget about the rest of the WWW. Anyhow, it has been some progress. Posting here a pic from today. I hate "selfies" but my girlfriend is not home to help me dress and take the pic. So here the chest armor is not closed in the back, and the straps have not been tighted which leaves the bicep armor to just hang... also the shins are not visible.

I have now completed the chest armor, biceps, the waist pieces, and the shins. Left are the gauntlets and feet.

The worst part so far was actually the shins. It took me three tries to get them somewhat right. It did not help that I ran out of my good foam either. I first used 8 mm foam mat (same as the chest), but that was hell to bend. So I tried a softer foam, which was way tooooo soft. FInally, I got some good foam (the expensive kind, used for the other pieces), and also made a dummy leg with my knee bent. That way it was much easier to get a closer fit, that I also was able to walk with.

Here they are (and yeah, I just love all those buttons I put everywhere)

What else? After finishing the bicep armor (before chest and shins) decided to re-do all the paint job. The bicep turned out more dark and worn, which I liked a lot better, so... one can of Montana Gold Black, and a couple of hours with dry brush, I was good to go.

I do not work as fast I would want to. I have seen people do amazing builds (predators, Iron man, etc) in a couple of days, and I can not figure out how they do it. It would probably help a lot if I had more space, and also I could save a lot of time not doing so many layers of PVA to seal the foam, not using the acrylic putty to fill in every gap, and also doing both outside and inside. Sure there has been a alot... A LOT of trial and errors, but now I know a lot more than when I started out. But tonight as I tried it on, I felt it was worth it :D

Yep it is coming along well. it will be worth it when it's all done and your out in it for the first time.

Very good paintjob on the armour. I have had trouble finding good foam for armour, where did you buy yours (butik eller web)?

Thanks everybody! It is really awsome with all the support!

I have started to work the dreads. Tryning to find the best way to cover the backing rods.

CoolleKotten ---> I will drop you a PM in swedish!

All right, time flies... and only 5 weeks until this thing must be completed.
Since the pic below was taken I have redone the cap with dreads since the dreads were to long, which made it to heavy and almost impossible to move the head. So a shorter version will suffice until I make my own silicone or foam dreads. Also the bio has gone though a touch up to better match the rest of the armor. Feet are almost done, just need to be painted, as well as the lycra suit which had not arrived when the pic was taken. Or rather a suit had arrived, but to my specification... so it had to be returned to China.
So, basicly all the body paint job is left to do, as well as the gauntlets. A long weekend is ahead of me so I will lock myself in and work 24/7, At least that is the plan.

Any great tips on how to attach the bio to the face? I'm thinking velcro on the cap and inside the bio... or any other suggestions?
