My ESB Boba Fett helmet progress

Here are some photos of my Malone Fett helmet in progress.
I've been fortunate enough to be working with a dedicated group of people who have all come together in a unified goal which is to attempt to recreate the most faithful representation of a Fett helmet outside of the archives.
I want to say thanks to everyone who contributed hours of debate, deliberation, and their hardcore scrutiny of the finest of details (mostly before I got involved :thumbsup).
My involvement in this helmet project is just a piece of a much larger collaborative effort which I am proud to be a part of.
A special thanks to you Lee.

This is our progress so far. The next step will be to wire up the electronics which will pass from inside the helmet, up through the stalk and into the rangefinder, just like the film helmets.
After that and a couple of other minor steps and it's time for paint.
I'll continue to take photos and post progress pics as there are new developments.

Looks like a great start!
Im so looking forward to see this. Especially the interior, which i guess you will reproduce too? Which helmet is this btw? Is it from RS's Prepro plaster cast? Also will it be as the helmet was in ESB or will it have the additional scuff-marks and scratches like the AOSW helmet?

Edit: Saw that you wrote that it was the RS helmet now.

Wow, when do you think you'll be selling these? :D
Looks great Gino! I'm almost afraid to close my eyes, I'm sure these will be snapped up in a giffy.

I'm shooting for as it was during ESB filming. At least as close as possible with the reference available.

Can be hard to tell sometimes which marks were there back then vs. what happened to it after filming.

Great progress so far, Gino! :cool:thumbsup

There's one detail I wondered if you could research further. It's a detail I think has gone unnoticed or one that people don't care about. I admit I dismissed it as insignificant until I saw the detail pop up in more and more photos. Here it is: I think the surface of the visor has a very subtle dip in it where the top of the vertical bar of the T meets the horizontal crossbar of the T. It's only noticeable in certain photos where the image reflected off the visor is distorted right at the location of the dip. If the visor were completely flat and uniform across it's surface we would not see this kind of distortion. I'm not talking about a distortion due to the overall curvature of the visor but a small distortion specific to an area about 1/2" x 1-13/16" wide.

Here's some pics illustrating what I mean:

Notice the bar of light being reflected vertically along the length of the visor. I think that it is one light (not two) being reflected in the visor, and the dip in the surface is causing the reflection to distort (or appear pinched).

forgive the crappiness of this profile drawing

I'd dig thru the Fett pic reference CD and find all instances where this distortion is seen... if I had time. But please check this out and see if there's anything to what I'm saying.

I looked through the hi-res photos we have and I cannot detect anything in the surface to indicate a wave/dip. If it does, it is too subtle to see in hi-res photos.

I think the clearest photo I noticed it in was one of Jeremy Bulloch in costume standing outside. It was taken sometime in the early 80's.

Yeah the infamous ESB brow dip. This is a casting of the Prepduction 2 helmet so he would have to ass that detail but we have not been able to determine if it was there during filming since an extra scratch appears in that area post filming possibly to cover damage.

Hey Lee,
I'm pretty sure he's not referring to the brow dip, but rather a dip/wave in the acrylic visor, which so far I have not been able to detect even in the high res photos.

Yeah, I'm not talking about the brow dip on the helmet, I meant a dip in the actual visor material.

It looks like it's just a "flex" thing. Where the visor material wants to flatten out more in the vertical part.

Gino, it may be one of those things we'll never be certain of. I would say doing some experiments with reflecting lights off the helmet to see what it would require to duplicate the same lighting as seen in photos might be the only way to get this detail right. One thing I forgot to mention, I did not notice this detail on the visor of the Fett statue at MotM.

I could see that. The reflection of the light is broader on the vertical part indicating it's probably flatter as well. Good point.

Hopefully, the lights will be completed soon.
Then I have no excuse to delay the painting. :sick
