My $0 Leap Of Faith

Hi all,

After recently deciding to keep my Grail Diary, I decided to try and add to it to make a bit more of an Indy display.
So I've traded for one of Alan Castillo's lovely Grails, which is currently winging it's way here.

In the meantime, I did a bit of reading here on the boards and saw some awesome Leap Of Faith paintings. This would go great with the other two items!

But before I go any further, I'd just like to say that I was never in any way aiming for 'screen accurate'. Just something that would look nice on my wall with the other stuff.

Being on a VERY tight budget, I decided to have a root around my garage to see if there was anything there I could use.
I found some old wood, woodstain and a piece of fibreboard that the previous owner had left. I also had a can of spray lacquer left over from previous projects.

I found some fantastic hi-res pics of the original painting, kindly supplied by our friend Alan Castillo again! :) (Thanks Alan :thumbsup)
I printed a copy off on my home printer and stuck it to the fibreboard, trimmed it to size and applied some lacquer. I didn't want to spray the lacquer on, so I sprayed it into a small container and brushed it onto the pic for that textured 'brush stroke' look.

I took the old piece of wood and sanded it down (it was originally covered in thick white paint - might have been part of an old solid door)
This I then cut to an approximate size to border the painting. I roughed up the edges a little, and made some faux 'cracks' with a Dremel.
After applying a little woodstain, I sanded the surface a little to rough it up slightly.
I went with the 'less is more' approach to the weathering :)

It was then just a case of sticking the fibreboard-backed painting onto the wood.

Yes, I know the colours are wrong.
Yes, I know the sizes are wrong.
Yes I know the weathering is wrong.

But for a total outlay of exactly $0.00 (excluding printer ink and paper :) ), I'm happy that I now have something to hang alongside my Grail and Diary :D

Thanks for looking

It's beautiful ! :love:thumbsup, and I assure you it will look stunning in the Indy display.

(Looks a helluvalot better than the ones I used to make :lol)

Great work, Nobby!

I always like it, when someone attempts to be on budget as possible!

You are right, most of the stuff you need for the "leap of faith"-painting you find lying around in the garage.

You inspired me to do the same.

Ehrm ... Alan, Nobby could you kindly point me in the right direction to the hi-rez foto of the painting? Neither my search for "Alan Castillo" nor "Leap of Faith" brought any results ...

Thank you both.

Thanks MF :), it certainly does.
I'm not the most adept scratchbuilder, but I'm sure that everyone gets that warm feeling when you can look at something and say "I made that" :D
