Movie sequels that instead of "2" should just be "again"

Top secret deleted scene.

Um, he was already dead. That was just Sarah remembering/hallucinating.

And Aliens? Seriously? The first one was an atmospheric, psychological horror movie/thriller. Two was much faster paced and more of an action flick. Maybe you need to go back and rewatch Alien?

I'm pretty sure it's a continued joke from when Cayman Shen asked if he was sure he switched discs. Either that or I'm just as confused as everyone else.

And maybe more people need to look closely at the story and structure of Alien and Alien. Aliens is practically a remake with action added in.

Although the majority of sequels are indeed much of "more of the same", there *are* a few sequels that really expand upon the original story and add another dimensional element.... just sayin' ;)

[Toy Story 2 jumps to mind...]

Not only is the story very different, Aliens is a completeley different genre - haunted house v combat movie with loads of subtext.

Ripley discovering her daughter is dead, setting up her mother/daughter relationship with Newt.

The Alien lifecycle/Queen establishined, Aliens easily killed when not based on a ship, aliens working together, none of which was alluded to in the original.

The batttle of the two mothers, following on from the earlier setup of Ripley wanting to protect Newt/her daughter vs the Queen and her offspring.

Seriously, most movie fans regard Aliens as one of the best sequels ever, because it is so different in how it expands the mythology of the first.

Weyland Yutani as a 'character'

The turnaround with Bishop being a good guy.

Three survivors - the 'family unit' continuing Cameron's theme even further.

Weapons technology vs biomechanical weapons.

Open battle vs sneaking around corridors (Aliens actually plays on our expectations of this when the marines enter the colony).

Besides the slightly 'one little indian' whittling of the marines, the two films are utterley different in theme, execution and mythology.

Alien 3 would be a better fit.

Hmm... I just noticed Iron Man 2. Its awesome!.. But he needs a new heart device to live (again), his company needs him back on top (again), a bad guy makes a suit bigger suit and plans on making an army of them (again), he needs to save Pepper in the dark (again). Its still cool though:D

oh and the Scream movies.

Hangover 2 definitely.

Transformers 2 (in that both the movies were just about transformers fighting and blowing things up with a meager story to give them an excuse to make the whole movie)

Not literally 2/again, but 3/again. Gonna stick my neck out and say Toy Story 2 and 3 cover essentially the same ground, only 2 does it better, in a less manipulative way.

What, like unstoppable Alien life forms kill almost everyone with only a handful escaping but with an Alien stowed away to continue the franchise?

You could say that about all the Alien films......oh, wait.

Yep, I'm with you on that one. i do enjoy the Alien movies though.

Surprised no one mentioned Back to the Future

I was going to mention those - but I dont really count them since the similarities are all almost intentional. It becomes a running gag in the 2nd movie that no matter what time Marty visits, every Tannen is essentially the same person and reacts the same.

My point in creating this thread was to point out movies that just reuse the same ideas for lack of creativity, although its a hazy line between the two...

I didn't want to overload this thread so for my view of the similarities between Alien and Aliens go here:

Media Illuminato

I did this pretty quickly so forgive any errors.

I have to say I completely agree, and as a big fan of both the Terminator and Alien duologies I see all the similarities.
Aliens is 'ALIEN, 'but this time we brought guns and marines', 'Oh, but there are more aliens too, darn'....
And T2 is just 'alternate reality Terminator, where everything is backwards', more or less.
T2 and Aliens also have many things in common :)

BTW, did Fast and Furious 1,2,4 and 5 use different scripts at all? Nr 3 sticks out like a good thumb among sore ones :p

Terminator 2
Aliens

Without having read the whole thread, let me add that these were both fantastic movies though.

Most sequels suck.

-Did anyone mention the sequels to these:

Friday the 13th
Star Trek
Final Fantasy
Final Destination
Mission Impossible
Universal Soldier
Scream
Resident Evil
Superman
Spiderman
Batman
