movie scores for bad films

been going through a load of jerry goldsmith this evening and came across the score to king solomon's mines that I bought on a whim god knows how long ago.

awful cheesy film but some nice pieces of music, which got me to thinking about other movies that weren't necessarily commercial successes but had some good music that rarely sees the light of day and most people may not recognise.

vangelis score for Alexander
vangelis score for mutiny on the bounty
john debneys score for cutthroat island, awful film but good opening theme

shawn pierce's orchestrated music for the tv series defying gravity
john barry's score for high road to china, a gorgeous gem of a movie but not shown for years on TV

any other suggestions that people listen to

John Barry's score for "Raise the Titanic". Lame film (although the model work on the ship as it breaches the surface is some of the best I've ever seen) but the main theme and incidental music is extremely good.

I've always thought the John Williams' score for Phantom Menace was far superior and much more enjoyable than the actual movie.

Hmm, never seen Raising The Titanic, but I recently heard the music and I have to agree it's great.
I think it obvious that anything by Goldsmith or Williams is going to be worth listening to, regardless of the film. I'd probably add Danny Elfman to that list as well.
I don't know how many people liked Dragonheart, but I think the end theme is great.

Hmm, this is a hard one to decide, after all, one person's 'bad' film is another's 'classic'

"Omen 3: The Final Conflict" isn't that great a film (though it does have some decent moments) but damn, Goldsmith's score for it is incredibly powerful!!! One of my favorites of that era.

Only thing I ever bought done by Goldsmith was the soundtrack to Star Trek First Contact. I really liked the main title... theme or whatever its proper term is. It's also the only Star Trek film I really, really like next to Wrath of Kahn (still want to get the soundtrack to that one but it hasn't been high on my list of priorities.)

I tend to really only like soundtracks and themes of movies I like though... I have a hard time mentally separating the way I feel about a movie from its music.

I really liked Megaforce when I was a kid though I'm sure I couldn't sit through it now. I even owned a copy on the old RCA VideoDisc format so that brings back memories.

I think Ace Frehley did the song at the end of the movie and later rereleased it with different lyrics or somesuch with Frehley's Comet didn't he?

The Phantom - aweful movie but really great soundtrack.

Gattaca - the movie is good, but too depressing. The soundtrack is phenomenal.

Gotta add though that John Powell is my latest favorite composer of the past few years. His stuff is amazing.

Many I would mention already have been, but one that comes to mind is The Saint (1997) by Graeme Revell. Well, not so much the entire score but the main theme. Very catchy. For a while it turned up in trailers a lot.

John Williams' score for Hook.
Randy Edelman's score for Dragon Heart.

You take back what you said about Hook! Love that movie.

I didn't notice it myself while watching the film, but I've heard a lot of people saying that the score for The Last Airbender was one of their favorites in recent memory.

Although I like the movie a lot, many apparently don't think much of Proof of Life, and that is a very under-appreciated Elfman score. IMO demonstrably one of his best scores, even though some self-styled "reviewers" think it's nothing special.

Oh and Jaws II, very mediocre movie, amazing fabulous score. We need an expanded release!

Jaws 2 has a great score - not a terrible movie by any means, but it does pale in comparison to the first one.

Another one is Goldsmith's The Final Conflict: The Omen III score. The music is absolutely fab, breathtaking, spine-tingling. Listen to it one time as a stand alone score, it's truly excellent. Shame the movie wasn't as good...

I liked Carter Burwell's soundtrack to Conspiracy Theory, but the movie was horrible.

Randy Edelman's work on Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story is also fantastic, though a lot of people thought the movie was rubbish... not me, though... I loved it! :)
