Motorcycle Fetish Red Hood (budget build)

Hey Folks.
Seems that there are suddenly quite a few Red Hood Builds right now, and I plan to add yet another. This is going to be a budget build, as low cost as possible. Also, progress is going to be relatively slow as I am in college, and hunting for a Coop placement.

This build is going to be a mix of several things. As the title states, I am aiming for a more motorcycle, street punk-like suit. I shall be making an Under the Red Hood movie style helmet out of pep, file courtesy of EyeofSauron. I shall not distribute the file, it is not mine. Ask him for it, or buy one from someone. Or google search. Whatever.

Currently, I am still cutting it out, lots of small details and mixed schedule and all. I am using the colour scheme of the movie style suit, so they dark grays and blacks, but making a chest armor piece with the red bat logo like the new 52 outfit, which shall be out of EVA foam.

I have a pair of motorcycle boots, used to be my dads, I just need to find some laces for em' (and perhaps get permission to use them :p) I will likely not armor them.
Undersuit will be a black zentai suit that I will modify slightly. I will cut a hole for my face, leaving the hood on to make things easy with the helmet, and cutting off the fingers at least halfway.
My jacket is a well distressed motorcycle jacket I got from a neighbor who was cleaning out his closet before moving. It doesn't have the high collar like in most depictions, but I think it is fine for my needs.

As for the rest, I will need to buy a pair of black cargo pants, a pair of black gloves, some foam core to make the guns and a knife, some fabric or black pleather and straps to make the holsters, and of course the essential paints, resins, foam sealers, etc.
My aim is to have this done in time for FanExpo 2014, (August) but at this point, I don't even know if I will be able to go. All depends on work. If not, Halloween is my secondary deadline, and next years FanExpo is my tertiary.

That's funny I'm using the same red hood reference image as you....good job so far can't wait to see more updates....keep going man it will look great!

i also wnt to do this build, but dont want to spend a lot of money on the jacket, so i have bee going to thrift stores. if i find a jacket at a deal, i will do the rest of the build.

For the foam armor/chestpiece, are you going to be attaching it directly to the zentai suit? If so, how?
I don't plan on attaching the chest piece ti the suit, I want to preserve the suit as much as possible. I will either be using nylon straps and buckles with lots of hot glue, or, if those are too difficult to find/ too expensive, my last resort will be backpack straps on the back, so it will kinda be like those plastic knight armor sets you can get at the dollar store, only more comfortable and with a strap to connect them so it wont fall off. Hopefully you understand what I mean.

Some of the few good images on google. :p Thanks. Nice work with your build as well. Yours is kinda an inspiration to mine. I really like the chest template pic you put up. I might end up modifying it somewhat, make it my own, but its great.

Good luck with your search. I will be sure to check yours out if you do start a build.

As for an update:
Still cutting. Thick card, as well as minimal time, (literally, my only time to work is between the hours of 12 and 2 am) mixed with the dozens of tiny pieces make for quite a challenge. I think I have six pages left or so. Looks like more because they are thick. So, no pics this time.

I wish i knew someone with a Cnc or something? I wonder if that would work with foam? Be so much faster

I've seen it. I have yet to find out how much it is, and where I can purchase it. Also, my belly is a little big for skin tight suits. Hence building a chest piece to somewhat disguise lack of pretty muscles.

You just can PM their Facebook page if you decide to go that route. I think they give you the price quote once you do that.

Regarding gloves, you can find some good under armor (or an off brand) glove that looks great without having hot hands. I personally use the under armor brand gloves and I don't sweat too much, even in the texas heat.

I contacted them, but the set is way out of my price range. As for the gloves, I may look in to the under armor ones, depending on the price. Likelihood is I will go for an off brand.

Either get under armour gloves or even motocross ones. Check your kijiji listings . thats what I did with mine. Got them for 20$

Yeah, I got my under armour (american spell check makes this difficult lol) gloves at the official website for 20. Amazon has them too. I looked into cheaper ones, but it's only about a $7 difference at the most, and I'd rather pay a little more for quality. (I've had them for about 4 years now)

My problem with the under armour gloves is that it's hard to find a pair without the logo. And that's a simple detail that can help detract from the costume as a whole. I just looked for tactical/shooting gloves on google shopping and found a pretty decent selection.

I was at the mall today, stopped in to sportchek to see if there were any motocross or under armour gloves and found some MMA ones. They're fingerless, but could work. I didn't get htem yet, and didn't check the price, I wanna keep looking but I know there is potential there.

Been a while since I posted, though this isn't a progress update since there really hasn't been much progress. I've had the pep pieces sitting here for a while now, don't know where my glue gun is, and haven't had the time to build due to work. I think I'm gonna abandon the pep helmet for now, maybe eventually build it. I'm still gonna be making the costume though, I have recently found a new way to make the helmet, and it seems like it will be easier than the pep way. I found this guy on Instructables who makes costumes quickly and cost efficiently. Conveniently, he has done a Red Hood build, and did a helmet tutorial, which I am going to follow as closely as I can. His process involves a carboard crown, a plastic hockey mask, and bondo. So, with luck, I would be able to make this work fairly easily, and have it still look good.
I still need to get a new glue gun though...

Another update will come eventually, dunno when. Hopefully in a couple weeks or so.

Watch out for that helmet tutorial. It's pretty tricky and it takes a decent amount of work, for a kind of crappy looking helmet. Maybe you'll have better luck than me though. Best wishes

Personally, it's one of the best helmets I've seen, considering its not pep or 3d printing. #3 of the top 5 in my books. Sure, the seam where it splits could be cleaned up a little, but that's all detail work. I guess I'm not going to be going 100% as close a possible though, since I hope to use mesh instead of lenses for the eyes.
