Hello gang,
I wanted to post a few pictures from our trip to Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party at DisneyWorld. We were there from the 12th of October through the 20th of October and costumed two nights. The costumes, worked on by a group of six of us, are based on the original Mark Davis drawings from the Haunted Mansion. Our characters, The Hitchhiking Ghosts, The Bride, Prudence, and Pickwick, were a big hit.
Here are few photo's from the second night of costuming as I considered the makeup and overall look of us better that night than the first.
Hitchhiking Ghosts outside the Indy Speedway
The whole crew after our private tour of the Space Mountain control tower.
The whole crew at the Pirates of the Carribean ride. Thanks to wonderful cast member for getting this good shot of us.
It's a small world afterall..............

Finally, here are some detail shots of the work. I'll try to go into some detail on the individual suits as they are listed below.
Pickwick, the only happy haunt to receive a name from Disney itself, is shown here in his classic pose. If only I had a nice chandellier to hang from as he does in the mansion ballroom party scene. The overall look was based off the attraction as there are not that many pictures and drawings of the character. The coat is an early 1800's style frock coat. It was hand made by our main taylor, Mr. Darrell Phillips (Phinneas Queeg of the hitchhiking ghosts you'll see later). The coat was constructed of medium weight twill, horsehair lined, and then a poly silver lining over that. The material was dyed with Aljo dyes taking it to a bright teal and then muting that down with pearl grey, royal blue, and black. Every button is functional. The wine glass is a freeze glass designed to keep beverages cold, but it was great to serve as sloshing prop for Pickwick. The cane was an antique that was refinished from an antique store, while the top hat was purchased new. The shirt, ascot, vest and pants are all from GoodWill. The scarf was made by me out of peachskin fabric. The boots are my own and used for other costuming projects. The gloves were custom dyed by me. The makeup was done by Darrell and is a custom design based on the original Mark Davis drawings. Contact lenses are F/X Eyes.
Ezra is the center of the Hitchhiking Ghosts trio. His makeup is self done and is based on the Mark Davis drawings. The coat was custom made by Darrell Phillips and follows an 1800's style long traveling coat. It is fully lined, machine washable, and looks great in person. The shirt, pants, vest and stockings are from GoodWill. The hat is purchased new. The gloves were dyed custom. The bald cap and wig are custom and done by Darrell Phillips. The shoes are a purchase from a regular shoe store and modified with leather tounge and buckles by Darrell. Overall, a good look and a good centerpiece to the crew.
Gus, the small prisoner from the Hitchhiking trio, is actually the oldest member of our crew of six. Steve pulled the makeup off by himself and based it on the original Mark Davis drawings and designs for Gus. The beard and wig are store purchased. The rag cloth overshirt is actually dyed muslin with multiple layers of cheesecloth sewn in and then shredded. Each layer of cloth was dyed a different shade of grey, green, pink, or teal. All the costumes and makeup follow this general color pallet. The ball and chain are a plastic chain from a home improvement store and the ball is a heavily painted Christmas ornament. It is ruberised to prevent cracking. A leather anklet holds it on and it is also attached to his waiste with a clamp in case he gets tired of holding it. Yes, Steve won't wear contact lenses, so his glasses can be seen. However, in the dark, it's hard to tell he has them on. He als wears cloth shredded booties to cover his shoes.
Phinneas Queeg, the traveling snake oil salesman, is played by our makeup artist and primary taylor, Mr. Darrell Phillips. Phinneas's costume is made up of a vest, shirt, and pants from GoodWill. The coat is an Inverness style traveling cloak, based on the Mark Davis designs. Darrell is wearing an extra tall tophat, carrying a real carpetbag that was dyed by me to match the color pallet, and sclera contact lenses of black and teal shades. The shoes, which you cannot see, have real spats, made by me, and are pale blue in color. The carpet bag was wired with two sets of LED lights to make it glow on the interior. It was a great effect in the dark. The makeup work was done by Darrell and is based on the Mark Davis designs from Disney. All of Darrell's hair is real by the way. :eek
Prudence, the maid, is never actually seen in the mansion, but her character did make an appearance in the movie. Her candelabra is seen i the endless hallway of the mansion ride. Prudence was played by Regina Phillips, who is our primary seamstress. She made the dress and apron in a little over 48 hours, patterning it by hand and custom tayloring it to her exact specifications. Her dress, boddess are seperate pieces and are finished off with a full apron and Master Gracey broach on her neck. The lace around the collar and sleeves is a faux undershirt. The makeup was done by Darrell Phillips and her candellabra was an antique store purchase. It carries some rather unqiue battery powered candles that flicker just like real flame in dim light. It looked very good.
Finally, we come to The Bride. Elizabeth did a good job in playing the evil Bride of the mansion attic. Her wedding dress is a GoodWill purchase and it has been modified in the back for easy exit. She is carrying a silk flower bouquet and a candle, just like the Bride did in the mansion. This costume is an homage to the original Bride, and not the new one that was recently put in during the September upgrade at DisneyWorld. Elizabeth also wears yellow F/X lenses and her makeup was done by both Darrell and Steve. She wears a long red wig to top off the outfit. Her heart lights up with LED lights under her dress in the chest area and glows an eerie shade of red, green, and blue. It pulses to the beat of a hear that is audible and generated by an I-Pod Nano under her dress. The I-Pod has a speaker that is kept in custom sewn pouch under the dress front. All in all, she was the spookiest member of the Happy Haunts and had a line of folks just wanting to take her picture.
So, the Happy Haunts say goodbye to the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween party. Disney was very gracious to us. We received much acclaim for the suits and were honored with studio pictures with cast and crew and by ourselves. The photo's were given to us free of charge. Also, a private tour and ride of Space Mountain was given for our efforts. If you have any questions about the suits, makeup, patterning, or the costumes in general, please let me know. If I don't know the answer, I'll get you in touch with the person that does!
