We're obviously thinking along the same lines... If you look closely, the acrylic is set into slots in the aluminum base. The base itself is a box within which you could put some LED lighting to shine up through the acrylic, lighting up the blaster and of course lighting up the engraving as well.

I just got Taig mini lathe for machining small greeblies. Doesn't have a knurling tool but could always buy one.

After reading your post again, I am reminded that my Dad once told me that he had a small precision metal lathe which he doesn't use... I think I'll have to see if he still has it. I'd love to get it running. Just watched a video on knurling as well, very cool. I had no idea how it was done!
