Making money from your hobby?

What section would I start a thread looking for someone to build a kit?

If you want to buy a service, go to the Junkyard and create a Want to buy thread. Just list out what kits you want someone to help build. There you will get the most exposure and people can PM you from there.

Soliciting to hire outside the Junk Yard in a thread will most likely get deleted by the mods, as they don't want people dealing outside the Junk yard. Of course, you can PM privately and mods won't know, but creating a thread specifically to hire someone (outside the JY) will draw the wrong attention from mods.

Ah more replies! Thanks for the advice Funky Jedi but I think I'll listen to the guys who are telling me to follow my dreams ;) There's no harm in trying. I know It's very unlikely I could make a living out of this- The thought of somebody wanting to buy something I've made and being happy with it is more valuable to me. If people like my stuff; that's cool. If I could earn a few sheets doing something I like doing; that'd be sweet. If it goes further than that; it'd be pretty rad. Who wants to be rich anyway?

Thanks guys.

Good luck with your venture. I tried making my hobby my job once when I did custom 12" figures. Made fairly decent money for about 6 months, but it got to the point that I started looking at it as a job and not a hobby and didn't even want to look at my own stuff anymore.

I've been over on the 405th.com for awhile. They specialize in halo props for those who don't know. They are a lot more lenient on the sale of their props. This is due to the fact that you can't get extreme amounts of detail in the card stock base created through the pepakura method. So the creators put a lot of extra effort into getting all the intricate little details in place. So if you are going the pepakura route I don't think you should have too much fuss from the creators or from licensors. Overall I've seen only 1 case of licensing violation in 5 years there. Every finished pepakura piece stands out as it own because of the work that comes with fiberglassing, bondoing, and all the little details you chose to add. Overall I've seen only 1 case of licensing violation in 5 years there. I don't think the sale of props would work well for a day job but to get cash on the side is definitely worth it

Pepakura or not, you're still using someone else's work as a base, and someone else's intellectual property. Just because you are putting in the finish work doesn't exempt you from anything

That is true. The sellers give credit where credit is due. But ultimately many of the files are free. People are able to modify and due as they please with them. That in addition to the extra amount if work that comes with making pepakura parts makes the people there much more lenient with the sale of their props. Please keep in mind this is just my experience with the people on the 405th, not anywhere elsewhere

I dont know much about the "protocol", but it sounds like youre nervous your props arent good enough to trade for money. Truly, if you put your heart into your props and costumes and dont do it JUST for the money, people will love whatever you throw at them. As you see in this forum, people are almost ALWAYS kind, descent, and supportive. Dont worry about that one bit!

My advice is to always give credit when you can, rather than when it is due. Maker of any kind will find that transparency leads to credibility and respect—two very important forces that can drive consumers to your business.
