cute girls / women..whatever, but they don't strike me as 'machikos',didn't she have dark hair and a nice tan? Those girls could be anything.

She was Japanese, as they appear to be, but yes; Machiko Noguchi would not have looked "dolled up". Even if she DID dress up, it would have been business dress or high end fashion..... not just showing flesh for the sake of showing flesh. ;)

Yeah, they may have some super small amout of Japanese ancestry....maybe. But who knows these days, can't judge a book by its cover. I wouldn't think 'machiko' if I seen them at a Con* They strike me more as steampunk or somethig.

Yeah I see girls like that at cons and what not. Cyberpunk/Steampunk. That girl on the left in the original pic, you can buy that "top" thing somewhere. I've seen it on other girls as well. Interesting design for sure lol

Exactly. Yeah, they're pretty hot girls, but they don't look like heroines from a novel, unless it was the literary equivilent of a cheap porno movie with steampunk aspirations. It does irritate me when female action heroes are dressed like prostitutes. It's not that they look "sexy". It's that it's just so bloody impractical. I mean, seriously, no bra? Whoever thinks not wearing a bra is a good idea when you're duelling people and chasing bad guys has obviously never had occasion to wear one. If you're anything more than an A cup, physical activity is decidedly uncomfortable when bits of you are flopping all over the place.

And.... HEELS. Just NO. Stick your female protagonist in some flat black leather biker boots - it'll still look awesome, I promise, but then it will actually be plausible that she can do a decent pivot to side-kick the monster in the solar plexus, or it's spaceman balls.

Clothes for this sort of character should allow freedom of movement [so not head to toe PVC, I'm looking at YOU Kate Beckinsale*] not have excessive material that could be grabbed on to, have non-crippling footwear, and supportive underwear. Come on... that's not too harsh a list. You can easily make an outfit that ticks all those boxes look good on a good-looking girl.

The Tomb-Raider get-up isn't too bad - a vest, shorts with a belt and pockets so she has somewhere to put stuff, and hiking boots. And she still looks hot.

I think personally I'd dress a character a bit like a ninja - in soft, figure-hugging black material, with the aforementioned biker boots, possibly a utility belt, and a cropped slightly retro black leather biker jacket. Yeah, the leather might creak a little, but hey, nothing's perfect.

*OK, I admit she looks awesome in Underworld. I can't help thinking though, that outfit has got to stink by the time she takes it off...

Well said.
Great flick; Underworld.
I agree the feminine hero (heroine) should be dressed more practically. Maybe like Tomb Raider as you mentioned or one of the outfits that the girl in Resident Evil wears. No nonsense and kick ass can still look good ;)

How do they look like Machiko?

They don't look like her at all in my opinion. ;)
The pictures the OP posted? They don't o_O
The pictures I posted? They don't either, but are there for discussion purposes of "proper attire for a bad ass heroine"

Machiko, eh... not so much. Their costumes are ok and I really dig the goggles the one on the left has up on her head. Super short skirts with their asses hanging out... not my style but it looks like they are having a great time.

I enjoy a heroine that dresses for the occasion and kicks butt. Someone like Rachel Morgan in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison. She has been caught in dead sexy attire and made sure to complain about it.

I am putting together a human hunting with the preds costume and I am basically putting together a SWAT like uniform with predator accessories such as the bio and cannon. Bits and pieces of armor. She has been on the run with our fave aliens and has been slowly repairing her stuff by using what she can find/scrounge/make.
