Ok, so whilst browsing Weta's website, i came across an image which i had never seen before, but want to know more about

It is an image of the Witchking - sporting a rather different helm than the one used in production.

I'm sure glad they went with the one we all know and love, this one just doesn't seem bad / evil enough!!!!

It seems as though this shot was taken during production, judging by the downed Olliphant in the background.

So any info you guys????

looks similar to concept art ive seen but i didnt know it actually made it to the set o_O

Hey :)

This was the first design for the WitchKing but when a clip of the battle was shown a large majority of the crew asked why Sauron was at the battle so it was changed so make it radically differnt from Saurons helmet but still keeping the "crown" part of the helmet :)

I remember a cutscene in the ROTK video game with this version of the Witchking. Guess the cutscene was made while they were still using this design in production.

There was also a rumor that they had shot or planned to shoot a scene where Aragorn actually battles Sauron in his bodily form at the Black Gates, but this apparently was met with much backlash from the purists.

Rightfully so, but I'd rather see that than Gimli the circus dwarf. The only thing that bugs me about that whole trilogy, which is still quite brilliant despite that major misstep.

But I digest.

actually the aragorn/sauron fight was filmed - they just super imposed the battle troll he fights over sauron...

They where going to make the Mouth of Sauron's helmet like that one, but thought that it would confuse the audience and they would think it was Sauron.

When Aragorn and the army show up at the Black Gates in ROTK film, remember the scene where Aragorn starts to hear Sauron calling his name, and he goes into a trance? At this point, they where going to show Sauron change into Annatar (photo below), and then when he sees him change back into Sauron, he turns back to the guys and says "For Frodo".

When you watch the film, pay attention to Legolas' face when Aragorn is fighting the Battle Troll. Legolas is going crazy to get to Aragorn, because it was Sauron. I think we will actually see the scene that was originally filmed in a extended future edition, hopefully blue-ray. (Also Arwen fighting at Helm's Deep which was filmed, but not shown).

It's still a fantastic looking helmet, I too am glad they went with the other design though, I would dearly love to see the scene with Aragorn fighting Sauron on a future release :thumbsup

I'm glad both were cut. Arwen would be a distraction to Aragorn... and the whole point of the story was for Sauron to get the ring so he could become physical, so if he can do that without the ring... then what would be the whole point of the story?

They shot the witchking scenes with that suit/helm. They Thought it looked to much like Sauron and went back to the drawing board very last minute and you got the one that made it to the screen.

Right, I don't think it was good idea either. But I would sure love to watch it, but we would sure all love to watch it.

I totally agree. I fell in love with the theatrical cuts...no need to Special Edition them to death.

The original DVD extended editions are certainly the best form of the films -- agree that no further tweaking is needed. Unless we wanted to edit out some of Gimli's comedy hour and maybe part of the 30 minute epilogue to ROTK.
