Lord of the Rings Middle Earth map in process

I know this has been done many times before, but I'm working on a draft of a Middle Earth map and I'm open to feedback. This one was printed on 20 lb bond paper, once I've decided what I like I'll start over with an 80 lb paper.

This is an overview of the whole thing - the intent on the edging was a cross between age/damage and a natural deckle edge on a handmade paper. Personally I'm thinking it's a bit much.

The paper in the bottom left is the 80 lb stock. It doesn't come across well in the photo but in natural light it is significantly more yellow in appearance. More like parchment to my eye.

I am also incorporating some watercolors to highlight certain features. In this image you can see that the Iron Hills and the norther part of Mirkwood have received color. Shorlines and wetland areas will also receive a color treatment, but right now I'm thinking that's as far as I will take it.

It's my first try at something like this, so if you have an opinion please don't hold back.

These look great. I have wanted to make some for awhile now. I have paper that I want to use but no way of printing it to size. The best I can hope is 11 x 17 inches.

What is the size of yours?

Best,
DBCooper

It is the native size of 36" x 31" inches. Printed it at Kinko's for 65 cents per square foot. The 80 lb paper is $6.50/square foot which is why I'm practicing on this one first. I have extras, if you're interested let me know and lets see what we can work out.

That's funny, just today I was calling places looking for quotes for the same project! My wife is a HUGE LOTR fan and I want to surprise her with it.

I've had no luck with printers so far but haven't called Kinkos.

Yours is coming along very nicely! Keep us posted!

I think you did an incredible job giving it an authentic look. It looks like it came straight out of middle earth!

Hi,

I'd be interested in one of your extras if you have it still. I've never experimented with the larger size print, and like the clarity of the map. I'll send you a PM.

Cheers,

Guy

How do you go about getting that effect on the edges of the paper?

It's a technique that I read about in Propnomicon. The thing I like about it is that the edge has a texture similar to the natural deckle edge on some sheets of handmade paper that I have. Here's the link: Propnomicon: The Edge of Time

On another topic, I think forum members who have been around for a while are aware that the map was created and submitted by Adam Savage to the RPF community a few years ago. I don't want to give anybody the impression that I made the map.

This is probably one of the best recreations I have seen. Excellent job. I wouldn't mind having one framed and hung up on the wall *ahem* :)

Dear sjg41669,

what an absolutely brilliant map!!!)

May I ask where you got the large .jpg picture you used? Any chance you could post a link to it or email it to me? I'd like to have a go at doing on myself!

Well done and again and many thanks in advance,

Judd
