I'm new to the forum and am wondering if you folks might give me some ideas or options on some original props I am working on.
I'm looking to fabricate 5 or 6 sci-fi "pulse" style rifles for my standard prop stores. I have the front ends already, in that I discovered a type of printer toner cartridge that has a very gun barrel look including the pump action built in. These are about 2-1/2 foot long, and will form the gun up to center mass/magazine attachment.
Where I'm looking for some input is in method and materials of making the grip and stock that are cheap, identical, and fairly easy to produce. I have some ideas of my own in this respect, but I'd welcome any approaches that more experienced hands have on this.
FYI the toner carts are styrene, or at least, I can glue styrene bits and parts onto them with the usual solvent glue. I'd also had success gluing on the white plastic waterpipe using the Oatey glue, but I think these are similar things, just "industrial strength".
My chief stumbling block is getting a pistol grip/stock that is strong enough to be used on set (and bear in mind actors DO NOT CARE about the props) that is easily duplicated. As I have a supply of these empty toners going forward from my office, I would like to be able to convert them into a new gun with a minimum of hand work.
I know there are some casting resins like Sil-White and other heavy plastics, etc. that would live up to the durability and duplication requirements, but as I'm trying to make a small "arsenal" a lot of the casting options are really out of my acceptable budget. But if any of you can recommend one that doesn't break the bank in quantity, I'd very much appreciate it.
Otherwise, any help or suggestions are welcome. Will try to post some photos of the "barrel" portion in the next few days. -R
