Lone Survivor (Post-release)

I read the book years ago, but had no idea they were making a movie of it. You should really read the book if you haven't!

Ahh, okay - saw an early screener and had some questions about the operation the SEALs were on - wasn't sure of the release date. Movie was good - intense, but good.

The book is awesome and I hope the movie holds up. LT Michael P. Murphy is the most heroic badass real life hero.

I had issues with the book, most specifically with Luttrell's repeated exaggerations, the fact that the operation has the wrong name attached to it, and mainly the fact that the Seals as a group have issues with it. (There's more, I'm not going to go into it item by item)

Luttrell didn't write the book, but he stands by it to a fault. If he has lied in the book at certain points (which he has) I have to assume he has lied elsewhere.

I really wanted to like the book, and I really wanted to like the movie when I found out it was being made, but I doubt I'll ever put forth the effort to see it.

Got to see an advance screening of this the other day. Never knew this was based on real events (supposedly) until the end credits. Thought it was just another military inspired action movie starring Mark Wahlberg. It had no where near the suspense or grittiness of Zero Dark Thirty or The Hurt Locker. It felt more like a watered down version of Black Hawk Down.

There is a book about this. The film had both the horror of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan mixed with the intensity of Black Hawk Down. Amazing film.

I saw it this week and though it was well done I did not like it anywhere near as much as the book.
The movie is different from the book in a bunch of ways.

Of course I understand it had to be different but the changes took away some of the emotions I felt from the book.
The book grabbed me in and held me there in the action scenes and in the movie it pushed me away to some extent.
Zero Dark Thirty was the opposite for me.....the movie was lackluster but the part with the SEALS in that one grabbed me and made me feel like I was there for the moment. Lone Survivor did not pull me into it.

Yes, the action in this was much more Hollywood feeling. It felt a bit larger than life. Also, did they really fall down a mountain? TWICE?!? I would've died after the first impact against a tree.

I have no problem with them falling down the mountain twice....Marcus has said a number of times he got lucky each time they went down. They had no place else to go but down.
Yeah you explained it pretty well....Hollywood action feel is correct. The urgency was missing for me.

Just got back from an early showing of Lone Survivor, they did a good job even though it wasn't very accurate to the actual events. It was done with love.

Yeah needless to say not a lot of Love for Luttrell in the SEAL community

Luttrell is a disgrace to the other Team members who died.

Way to go for the cash grab a-hole

Are you juiced into to the SEAL community? I am not but can't find any published evidence of this claim from actual SEALs.
It is my understanding that the majority of the money generated goes to a fund to help others. Have you seen the interviews with Luttrell? The man is obviously haunted physically and mentally from what happened to him and his buddies. It does appear that there may be some errors in the book but I don't think they amount to much and don't stand out compared other SOF accounts I have read and SEAL stories in particular always seem to be bombastic, like the operators that tell them.
Calling this man names unless you have a very specific set of bonafides is uncalled for IMO.

Yes I know current Operators in the Teams.

A lot of SEALS past and present look down on those who capitilize off their association with the Teams as do I.

Word travels fast in the Community and I can tell you from what I have heard grated most in the Teams was Lutrells fantasy of whether Murph called for a vote to terminate the Civilians that discovered them.

There is no way in HELL that would have ever been brought up

Out in the field there is NO vote you do as you are ordered PERIOD.

Lutrell should have kept his mouth shut than tarnish the memories of his Teammates
