Live Action Anime Movie?

Greetings,

I heard this rumor about Robotech a few years back. At the time, it was said Tobey McGuire was trying to get the rights to do this project (or at the very least the part of "Rick Hunter"). Since that time I have heard nothing except NOW the scuttlebutt is "Leo DeCaprio" has taken it from Tobey.
I ask this because I have seen some unbelievably BAD live action attempts recently.

- The Last Airbender (Och...it was BAAAAAD!)

Everything Wrong With The Last Airbender In 4 Minutes Or Less - YouTube

- Dragonball Evolution (Only saw a clip....couldn't stop laughing.)
- G.U.N.H.E.D. (Too bad on that one.)

I also believe a Bubblegum Crisis Live action is scheduled and the thought of it is making me cringe! I have also heard Charlize Theron was being considered for the Sylia role and I sincerely hope this was just a rumor!
Now, the Yamato movie wasn't too bad. The effects were dazzling to say the least but I can't honestly say it did "Starblazers" series any service, IMO.
Personal note: Akira is evidently in the works as well.
I'm not sure animes will EVER translate well into live action.
What do y'all think?

-Peace-

If 'anime' is slang for 'animation' or 'animation movie', how can you truly have a live-action anime movie?

I've been waiting 30 years for a Robotech movie.

Initial D live action was complete ****. The racing was ok.. The rest was crap.

Just had to throw that out there.

Greetings,

"D"?
You mean as in "Vampire hunter D" or was it supposed to be "Speed Racer"....because that one blew also!

I actually liked speed racer. But no. I mean Initial D. It's an anime about racing. It's an awesome anime but the movie is garbage.

I'm still waiting on that Cowboy Bebop movie Reeves has been promising for years. Trigun too. Fullmetal Achemist would be pretty awesome as well, but I'm sure they will ruin everything about them.

Aside from the acting, I enjoyed The Last Airbender. I hadn't watched the series yet, so it was quite a shock when I did.

As long as they don't change any core elements, I can be pretty open when it comes to that sort of stuff. I enjoy reimaginings because it is new material and for me adds more to watch.

Except Dragonball Evolution. Kill it. Kill it with fire.

Live action Kiki's Delivery Service in production.

Miyazaki's perfect film really didn't need a live action reboot.

Anything Miyazaki would be watched opening night. They should do Spirited Away. THAT would be crazy.
That would be interesting.

Well, the real tragedy about Kiki is that Miyazaki has nothing to do with the live action film. Since Kiki is based on a series of novels the filmmakers are probably going to parallel the books more than Miyazaki's film. IMO the strength of the original animated film has at least as much (and probably more) to do with Miyazaki's treatment than with the source material.

Miyazaki doing Kiki is like Billie Holliday covering "Good Morning Heartache." She may not have written the song but, when she sang it, the song became hers. Similarly, Kiki will always be Miyazaki's.

I'm still waiting to see it stateside but the reviews on the live action Rurouni Kenshin have been very positive. Could be the best reviewed live action movie based on an anime property I've heard of and they've already green lit 2 sequels.

Maybe only the Japanese can pull off a good live action adaptation on their own properties :unsure

It seems like the Japanese live action takes on anime/manga properties do pretty good. I heard that the live action Crying Freeman movie in the 90s was okay. Fist of the North Star...they tried but the budget was too low and the actors badly cast. There's an asian live action Dragonball movie on youtube that's so weird it's funny and Master Roshi even has the turtle shell. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D91lTP-ACcU It has english subtitles. The Jackie Chan City Hunter movie wasn't bad, not really following the original story though, but there is this gem in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z4Psls1ngwM

I kinda liked the live action Hong Kong "Initial D", I must admit.
Maybe it's because I expected to hate it.

I honestly think the Japanese go for story telling an character development first, action second. American movies are the exact opposite.

As far as I know there was a live action Gundam movie too. It was in English I believe (not dubbed, but English cast).

You could easily do a live action version of, "The Wind Rises," and some recently suggested a live action version of "Barefoot Jen," which I doubt would go over too well in the US (I have two uncles who were supposed to take part in the invasion of the Japanese home islands in late 45 or 46, you'll never convince me that dropping the 2 nukes on Japan wasn't the correct move, given what was known at the time).
I don't see how Macross could possibly translate into just 2 hours or so. Way too much from just that series alone to stuff into such a short timeframe, it's like having "Gone with the Wind" edited down to half an hour... That said, a well-done Macross movie which is accurate to the costumes, mecha and weapons would be amazing, assuming it isn't done like the most recent Yamato movie was.. man that stunk,
Gunhed, I must admit I'll watch it from time to time for some reason.
