Lightweight stone look-a-like?

Looking for a material that will adhere well to wood and can be textured to look like stone (or a reasonable facsimile thereof). This is for a sign that will hang on a wall (so needs to be as lightweight as possible) and I could use some of the gurus of this boards advice asap.

I was thinking a light coat of stucco, but I have never worked with it before.

PS Must also take paint well.

Thanks in advance for any help guys and gals!!!:thumbsup

There are all kinds of stone spray paint that is pretty realistic from a distance.

What are the dimensions of the sign?

It's 2x3 ft.

Backer is thin birch plywood and has a border of .5 inch half round dowel (which will also be covered with whatever material is used.

I had thought about that but I want to do something a little more substantial when up close. Its a gift for a friends new house.

Thanks for the replies so far! Keep 'em comin'!!

You can mix 1/3 latex primer with 2/3 drywall joint compound and use a round texture brush to create a heavy stipple which can be 'knocked down' with a taping knife or let dry and sandpapered. Additional coats can be applied to create the desired effect. However, using plywood as a substrate, cracks are a remote possibilty, but that might add to the the effect. Then you could topcoat w/ that stone texture spray paint (as mentioned before), or even better, two shades sprayed from different angles (shadow effect). just spitballin' -Jason

Not a bad idea there. I will probably paint and use washes and such to get the desired effect for the stone (colorwise). I have used the stone spray paint before and while it is an interesting effect its not the picture I have set in my mind.

I was worried about using the wood as a base material, but we'll see how it goes. I think that's why I was originally thinking about Stucco. They have ready mixes at Lowe's but I'm not sure if you have to use the metal mesh with that stuff as well. Anybody know or can give me any useful stucco'ing tips?

Heh...asking about stucco...where do I think I am? The Replica Building Forum? :lol

The paint and drywall compound is what we used to use all the time at the Haunted House I used to work at. Works great and looks pretty realistic when it's painted right.

I'd get some of that pink (or blue) insulation foam they use in house construction and carve out of that. You can then coat it in some acrylic texture medium (available at most any hobby and craft store) to make it look like rough stone and paint with acrylics. Seal it up and you should have what you need. :)
