Lifesize "museum" display question

I know many of us have lifesize pieces in their collection and most have shown how they display them. Mine is almost done so I had a few people over for a dinner party (about 15) as a kind of tester. Nobody that came over knew about my "museum" and no one was a geek. I wanted to get a feel of how an everyday joe would react and process what they saw. Mostly co-workers, random friends and family.
Their reaction to everything was pretty good though they were all a bit overwhelmed :lol
The main thing I noticed was the unfamiliararity with most of the characters. Though they were impressed, they didn't know who most of them were. As a result I spent half the night walking from character to character explaining who they were.
As part of my fine tune process, I want to eliminate this.
I want to have several stands with an angled sign on top (about 2-feetish tall) explaining the chartacter and of course their name, like something you would see in a museum. I've been scouring the web and can't find anything suitable to use for signage that doesn't look cheap. I did find something that would kind of work but they want 99.99 each and I have about 12 doods that need coverage!
So...any ideas?

There is a member here that has similar stands to what you want, give me a minute, I'll get you the name.

Brad, once again my hero! (unless you can't produce the info. In which case I will demote you back to "minion".)

Armando... can do this on the laser, or you could pretty easily combine vinyl letters with acrylic.

The base / patform sounds like a pretty easy bit of woodworking.

Phillip, Kerri and I just need to move to Texas and call it done!
Brad, thank you. You may live for another day.

Just move into Phillips other half of his wharehouse. Make it into a loft space/prop room. :)

There ya go... That would save me from piling more junk in there.

I like those tall, slender stands. Maybe a little larger plaque to tell more of a story, but very stylish.

The stands are simply from those cheap lamps you get at Target or Walmart. They usually run 7-10 bucks. You remove the electronics/wiring and only use two of the three sections for the pole. Atop each one is an MR style plaque stand. It can be glued, but I use double stick tape. Hot glue or epoxy is better. I sometimes rotate displays so I like mine removable. You throw away half the lamp but it sure works nicely and the stand has a good bit of weight to it which makes it nice and sturdy.

Dave :)

No kidding??? That's absolutely brilliant!!!
I'm on my way to Wally World!
Thanks!

Even better. Nice.

Great thread, I really enjoyed reading this and I love the museum stand ideas. Where's the best place to get those little plaques that would go on top of the stands?

What would be really cool is if in the stand, somehow you could have an audio device with a motion sensor that would play a few clips. Again, don't know where you could get one of those.

The stands are both authentic and replica MR style. I've picked them up here and there. Most of my plaques were made by Gatorbait. He's not the only one that makes them however. Just ask around.

Dave :)
