Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey coveralls

Hey all-

Long time lurker, first time poster. My boyfriend's been a member for years and I've always read over his shoulder. I finally have something to show that you guys might be interested in. Usually, I sew girly stuff....like Victorian gowns but I've always loved sci-fi, comic books, what have you.

Recently I put together some jumpsuits/coveralls from 2001: A Space Odyssey for my boyfriend and myself. I took about 7 or 8 days working on the details and fitting mine...being female and a little vertically challenged I had to shorten the torso a few inches from the base pattern I was using. My boyfriend's suit was started the day before the convention we were going to wear them to. I pulled an all-nighter and a most-of-the-dayer on the day of the convention to finish his, handstitching velcro and patches on at the hotel. My 14hr sew-a-thon did produce an f-up...one thigh pocket is higher than the other. :unsure

As is typical, we didn't get any good pics of us at the con in the costumes, so I put his suit on my dress form for these pics. We went back and forth about the color...gray or blue? I have some blue twill that was our first choice but we might save that for 2010 suits.

I used the Kwik Sew Men's Coverall pattern 3389 as a starting point and just tweaked the details like the side hip pockets and the shape of the collar. Then I just added the pleated pockets on the chest front, made slit/bound pockets on the legs and arms, made the back pleats deeper and added elastic across the back. We each used a strap from a pair of suspenders for our belts.

The biggest change I'll do next time is to make a front facing along the zipper that goes down the entire length of the front. The pattern has you make a facing for the top and bottom halves seperate, but that creates a seam allowance at the waist that can sometimes get caught in the zipper.

Enough babbling...you want pictures!

If anyone has any suggestions regarding construction or the details, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I might be making one more of these for a friend and after that it's onto OS Lost in Space Judy and Major West costumes and more flightsuits :confused for Airwolf....hope to have that stuff done for Dragon*Con. Thanks for looking!

Outstanding! The name tape really sells it.

Thanks, guys.

The name tape was a little tricky since you never really get a good shot of it in the movie. We weren't sure if it was embroidered or hand-written or something else. So we used iron-on transfers to put it on twill tape. It'd be nice to find out what it really was....and it'd be even nicer if someone made better patches. But hey, ya work with whatcha got.

We'll have to post the photo we took with Gary Lockwood...he seemed to be pretty impressed with them. I don't think I've ever seen anybody else try this, other than with an off-the-shelf jumpsuit.

Awesome job, Danielle!!

Thanks! I know it's not exactly the coolest looking costume (even though it's from one of the coolest movies EVER) but getting the details just right took a lot of research. Luckily, we were able to find someone with a screen used suit and he gave us some info and pointed us in the right direction when it came to those "little details".
