Kiki's Delivery Service sign

I bought a scroll saw a couple of months ago and haven't really tested it out yet, so I decided to do a quick project. My mother-in-law loves the movie "Kiki's Delivery Service", and I've always wanted to make the sign that she hangs up at the bread shop. This is going to be a gift for her this Christmas.

First of all, this is NOT the exact sign from the movie. The sign she puts up is actually made out of bread, so I don't think I can pull that off on a scroll saw lol.

I believe this design is taken from the DVD set (don't quote me on that though, I'm not entirely sure, I found it on a t-shirt site).

Made from MDF and wood glued together. I plan on painting it solid black, and possibly painting her bowtie red. Not sure yet. All in all, I think it came out great for my first scroll saw project. My plan is to do another Kiki sign for myself using another sign design I found.

One of my favorite movies and very cool sign, I like the idea of black but with the red bow, definitely need photos when done!

Currently waiting for the first coat to dry. Should have pictures of it black tomorrow.

Ha, I love this movie. Will you be painting it solid color or full detail?

My plan is to do it solid black with her bow painted red. We will see when I get to that stage.

Also, my next sign won't be in MDF. The sanding seems to keep roughing up the edges even more. Very aggravating.

Like I said before, MDF sucks lol. Too many pits that just get brought out when painted. Kinda makes it look like it's made of metal I think. Still need to paint the bow red.

Have you tried shooting it with a few coats of primer? It should fill in the pits quite well. After that, just give it a light sand to smooth it out a bit.

Yeah that was my first step. I gave it a coat, sanded, gave it a coat, sanded. It's gotten better over time but the cat and radio are so delicate that I can't sand it enough I guess. Either way this was a practice run. The MDF I just had laying around. Next time I will use a better medium.

Definitely gives that metal look to it worn torn sign. I've had some luck spraying shellac on MDF before painting it to help with the pits, I believe its bulls-eye brand from home depot or lowes.

I will have to check it out. Never used that stuff before.
