Kids Iron Man suit, made a start :)

So after lots of reading and watching videos it was time to make a start on a Iron Man suit for my 8 year old. This is my first costume build, although I've built RC planes using very similar methods and materials so got some knowledge (not much though! lol) I'm using JFcustoms MK4 files and making it out of 6mm PE (Decathlon exercise mats!) I've taken lots of measurements of him as he doesn't live with me so I can get on with it when he's not here. Guessing that's going to cause problems but I'll work it out! He's been here today so made a start on the chest piece. I re-sized the file by refereeing to images of other builds, measuring the boy and playing with the rescale settings in pepakura designer. Lots of going backwards and forwards between photos and plans but eventually hit print when I thought I'd got it right! Tried the paper cutouts on him and it looked ok so moved onto cutting the foam. First thing I found was the blades I'd got for my Stanley knife were rubbish! Hate blunt knifes so switched to scalples, kept sharp with a quick swipe up and down my jeans every few cuts When cut out I started using super glue but it was awful to use! Think the material is a bit too porous so switched to contact glue and that works so much better, just about instant adhesion and very little mess, just running a small bead along both edges and spreading it with a tooth pick.

It's far from perfect but pleased with it so far :) What do you think to the fit? It looks alright in person but seems a little small looking at the photo! Anyway I'm going to use this thread to show how I'm getting on so any comments or tips would be great :)

Will do :) Think I'm going to be using the pep as a rough guide and building it with a little less detail to speed things up a bit, plus I know the suits likely to get wrecked first time out! lol I had a go at the middle part of the abb's the other day. It's very difficult with my son not being here to tell if it's the right size! Think what I'm going to do this weekend when he's here is cut out lots of basic templates as working from just measurements and drawings isn't going to work for me!

Anyway like I say, I'm doing a simplified version of the suit so the abb's are a single piece of 6mm foam with 4 pieces of 2mm over the top to give detail. I think I'll do the side a similar way but need to fit this to him first and get measurements!

A cushion just isn't the same for measuring lol .. Where did you get the foam ??? I have problems trying to find the foam

I remember my dad making me a sword and shield , memories that stick with you :)

No it's not a very good substitute! lol The red foam is a 6mm yoga mat I got from Decathlon, a sports shop here in the UK and the white is just 2mm from the craft store. No progress this weekend we've been building a solar powered toy car! lol
