Jumping in - Space Marine build

Hello all,

I have been reading a lot of good builds on here and thought it about time I jump in and start one myself. I have chosen the Warhammer 40k Space Marine. I do not play 40k, but I have been a table top gamer for 30 years starting with Battletech and ending with Clan Wars(Lot5R table top). I no longer play table top game, but have always loved the creative aspect of painting them, and 40k always grabbed my attention when I saw really well painted armies. So; yea...a Space Marine.

I have downloaded Pilerud's extensive Power Armor file and began, like every other newb, with the helmet. I decided to use foam and foam board. I want to use the foam board to help stiffen certain areas and the EVA foam for the bendy areas and contours. My question is do you all think the foam board is a good idea, or is there a reason more people do not use it? Here are a couple pictures of the started helmet.

I also plan to use the foam board primarily for the back pack unit. I am using the 935 scale files and am hoping that I am not wasting my time with it, because here is the kicker- I am only 5'5". The only people I have seen even attempting the Space Marine full size builds have been in the 6' range. Everyone under that, that I have seen, has used the 768 scale files.

So to sum up my questions: is foam board a good choice for armor builds and am I too vertically challenged to pull off a space marine?

a friend got me into reading the warhammer books.. and I myself started a helmet that was too big in scale.. :(

yours looks great so far.. If you feel you're too vertically challenged, there are ways around that! so many folks built stilts to compensate.. aren't some of them supposed to be 8' tall?

ok found this in the Space Marine 40K wiki "Within two years after the surgery, the Space Marine's skeleton will be larger and exponentially stronger than a normal man's with growth having topped out at around 7-7.5 feet in height with an equivalent amount of skeleto-muscular mass. "

so really.. it's up to you how you want to do the build.. If you want to be REAL sized space Marine and feel the part, I'd probably do the stilts and make everything bigger.. If you want to keep it at 5.5 .. then just make sure everything is scaled down to your size..

Going off of what wanderer said, i dug up an old (official) diagram for the size of space marines. Hope this helps

check out the link in my sig bar, i'm 5'6" and building the 758 scale files, a couple of pics on there should give you an idea of how things fit roughly at that scale.

To get the right position in the knee i'm having to use 3" tall bases in the boots and i'll be making some mods to the torso when it's been hardened to give me more arm movement. Other than that it seems to be a pretty nice fit with plenty of room to move in.

Good luck with your build

Nice start on the build. I have been doing a lot of research on space marines and trying to choose which one i want to make. So many to choose from, and i though it was tough choosing which Iron Man MK to make, lol. anyway, im not sure what scale to make mine at. I have a lot of files that i have found. I was lucky enough to find two sets of complete files one for pep and one for foam. Im 74" tall ( 6'2") and i want to make the suit to be the size of what i hear is a space marine height of 7' tall. i have files from JFcustom for foam templates, and i dont know who made the other ones that i have. I got them from another Cosplay forum that is just for Space Marine builds.

Since i cant make up my mind on which SM to make, im going to combine a bunch and make a Hybrid Space Marine. it is going to be a combination of several SM's. Here is a list of what i would like to incorporate into the build.

Deathwatch + Blood Angels + khorne Berzerkers = SICK!

Also going to incorporate the Destroyer pack and Heavy Bolter. i know that the Berzerkers are CQB fighters and they dont like range attacks, but what the hell.

From playing the game on the 360, the colors im tossing around are

Blood Disciples
Red Corsairs
Black Legion
Chosen of Nemoroth

Here are a few images of what im looking at for reference.

Small update. Finished both boots yesterday. I think I'm happy with the way they came out. I do not know why, but I found it comical how large they are. Maybe it is because I am so short and seeing things in a different scale brings amusement to me. Anyway here is what I ended up with.

You'll notice the cardboard box the boot is on. That box is actually two fold. It's my work surface, but also my blade sharpener. I stumbled upon a channel on Youtube by a man named Murray Carter. He makes Japanese blade for a living. He said "Anything that dulls a knife can also sharpen it". I watched him sharpen a blade with a cinder block and strop it on a piece of cardboard. I thought "Brilliant", so between cuts I strop my knife on the cardboard. Stays sharp much longer.

Today looks like taping the shin pattern and hopefully getting them cut into foam. Trying to get as much done before I take a vacation to Las Vegas in three days. Hopefully when I get back I will be building the stills.
