Star Wars Jedi Training Remote Blender 3D Model With Cycles Renderer Materials

Version 2.0 - New Very High Res Model (aprox. 1.8 million triangles in the remote) - Jedi Training Remote that appears in Episode II and in others (In Episode IV - A New Hope it originally appears but looking much more worn and old). Still even with all the improvements the model will be available for download completely free as it was with the older versions.

Model was created with Blender version 2.70a.

This is a new completely redone 3D model of the Jedi Training Remote that I did around 2012. This 2.0 version has every part remade and/or so heavily modified that is virtually a completely new model. Like the older version it has no texture artwork. So it is more like the one in Episode II cause those were newer (and by the way it was Episode II and not Episode I as I originally said in the older model documents cause that is where the young padawans appear using a bunch of these remotes for their training).

The older version that had the highest number of polygons had 253,154 vertices and 225,949 faces. This new version 2.0 has 968,213 vertices, 922,925 faces and 1,874,318 triangles. Most objects have been redone (from scratch) with more polygons for better close-up rendering quality and many other have been heavily edited to be much better.

All the objects have been cut or made flush with the corresponding surfaces on which they rest. What I mean is that in the older versions many objects went right through others and intersected with them instead and even though that worked fairly well now they have been trimmed and adjusted to end at the surface which is better. I redid the sphere with more polygons so when I cut these objects they were better fitted to its surface curvature.

All the parts have been given round edges and/or round fillets contrary to the highest poly version in the older ones were only some edges were rounded and/or filleted. All parts have their details (greebles) welded together with the part seamlessly as a single mesh like in the real life prop when in the older models many of those details were just parented to those respective parts. That is why it has such a high poly resolution because of all the round edges and round fillets and all the added round resolution and integration so it can be rendered even in closeups without problems.

Look at the included clay render images particularly the ones named ClayRender4.jpg and Wire&ClayCombined1280x800-4.jpg and you will be able to see clearly how the parts have been completely welded together seamlessly. All parts are now done like that. Many parts sizes and proportions were adjusted to more accurately resemble the original prop dimensions and proportions. I think that this will make the model also better for 3D printing cause it will only need a few modifications for such a purpose (like giving thicknesses to the parts). The high poly res will make 3D printed models of better quality. This is something that could potentially be used by some of you guys that are prop builders if you do get interested.

Note: The model needs an environment texture for it to render like the wallpaper that I did (otherwise the scene will render pinkish with the missing texture). Info on where to get this same free HDRI texture and how to put it back into the scene is in the accompanying docs titled AboutThis3DModelVer2-0.pdf.

Also in that document you will be given a much better description of the changes and improvements given to this new model. It describes better many changes that were done in terms of sizes and proportions. And there were many changes that I did after finding much higher resolutions photos of the original prop.

There is one small thing that I still do not know about the real prop. I know that the real prop has 4 truck wheels that have the locknuts and 4 wheels that do not have them according to the info that I have seen here. What I do not know is in which way the pattern is done. I do not know if it is the 4 upper wheels with the locknuts and the 4 lower ones without them, if it is an alternating pattern such as one wheel with the locknuts and the one right beside that one without it (sort of a checkered pattern) or if it is half of the model (vertically instead of horizontally) with the locknuts and the other half (sort of like the other side of the moon) without them, do you see? I still do not know what is the correct pattern.

For that reason the locknuts are the only greebles of the model that are not welded together as whole to their respective parts (the wheels of course) cause I left them separated (vertices not connected/welded but still joined to the wheels as a single part) so it is easy to remove them from 4 of the wheels for anybody interested in doing so if that person does download the model. Now, if you do decide to do that you must know that all the parts are instanced which means that if you make a change to one of the wheels it will be reflected in all other 7 wheels and the same is so for all parts that are equal (that are the same shape). So in order for you to be able to remove the locknuts from only 4 wheels you must first select the 4 wheels that are going to be without them and turn them into duplicates instead of instances or at least turn those selected 4 wheels into a separate set of 4 instances so you will have 4 instanced wheels with locks and 4 instanced wheels without them.

For info on how to turn instanced parts into duplicated parts search the web. You can easily get help for that at many Blender forums specially at Blenderartists.org.

You can download the model from Deviantart here:

And my usual Mediafire backup folder:

Search for it in the 3D Models folder.

The next one is similar to the older wallpaper but with the new model and rendered in Cycles instead:

The last one is an alternate rendered preview that you will get from the way the Blender file is currently set. Just remember that the slight blurry glow from the illuminated parts was added as a post-proccesing effect in Photoshop CS4 (can be done in the freely available Gimp software the same). I also edited the highlights a little in Photoshop so the model looks a bit glossier in my render than the one that you will get if you render it as the 3D file is. Also check the info about the environment texture that you will need (also free) which is explained all in the accompanying PDF documents.

This is along the lines of my idea that is good to have cooperation between the 3D modeling groups and the Replica Prop Builder groups. Both crowds are many times following same interests in terms of finding good quality reference materials to be able to create either accurate computer 3D models/or accurate physical models. We both know how much work goes into finding the necessary information for the creation of an accurate model. And today due to the proliferation and the rapid progress of 3D printing technologies these paths are starting to intersect even more.

This is one of the several reasons of why I build my models using Blender. One of them is the fact that Blender is a program that is available to anyone with a decent enough PC cause it is completely free. In that way my models can be accessed by anybody that downloads the software cause it doesn't need a piece of software that costs thousands of dollars to do so.

I used a lot of additional info and images from this forum itself in order to improve this model and create this whole new version 2.0. I hope that this model can be put to good use as a resource of any kind (several different possibilities) for members and visitors of this terrific forum which is a little jewel in the Internet. It could be used as a reference for model builders or perhaps for 3D printing, etc. I hope that you like it and I hope that it is of enough quality for you discerning builders, I put a lot of work in this new version to try to make it far more accurate than the older ones and closer to the real prop as I was able to do with the available resources that I had. Again, a big thanks to all the people of the forum for all their hard work in helping others with the precious information that they voluntarily provide.

Don't be confused, in the render at first sight it may look very similar to the older models but I fixed a helluva lot of things all over the model, it is almost completely redone. Once you open the file and inspect it carefully you will know that is a whole new beast. And sorry for the long post, I was just trying to provide all the pertinent information. :)
