Is the ST:The Experience communicator worth the money?

I thought about ordering one and wondered if anyone here had pics of one and an opinion on them. I can't afford to shell out the bucks for the MR one, so I thought this might be a decent one to get. Anyone?

The $50? Sure, it's a nearly exact copy of the Master Replicas one.

The sound is awful on the Vegas.. and the flipgrid is a more flat-golden color rather than brass. The "call button" on the back is cut in the shape of a delta shield instead of an oval. And the bare-aluminum parts are chomed. And if you want to get really crazy, the haircell pattern in the Vegas comm's shell is going the wrong way. But overall, the two comms are identical.

So, you're saying it's crap? :p

Leave it to Phase to produce excellent pics AND a review. :D So the sound of the chirp as you open it is bad? What all does it do? Any other sounds besides the chirp and the call button tone?

I figured it wouldn't be bad for an inexpensive prop to have at home.

And thanks for the info, Phase.

:lol

Actually it's ideal for keeping handy for that occasional urge to "flip open" and request to be beamed up. :D

The shortcomings I mentioned are all minor. The sound tho is utterly atrocious. It sounds like it was recorded by holding an MR up to a cell phone. :lol

It has echo on it, and sounds really staticy and raspy. The sounds themselves are identical to the MR: press the back button and the "boop boop" the-ship-is-calling sound is heard. However unlike the MR, which pauses about four seconds after the button press to play the sound, so that you can pretend you didn't press it I guess :lol, the Vegas comm sounds the call immediately after pressing the button.

The "chk-chk-chk" sound when you flip open the grid is the same. Pressing the left control button blinks the red LED, on both comms.

When you twiddle the RIGHT button on the MR (it's actually kind of tricky to get it to work), the "static" sound is heard. On the Vegas, you just have to PRESS the right button, but the sound is the same.

So overall the Vegas comm is actually easier to use. But the Vegas' fit and finish is a little sloppier. The black plastic case is too glossy, and the chome is a little flashy. The Flipgrid is painted flat gold, but if you strip off the paint it's brass metal underneath, which is authentic.

The moire pattern looks the same on both comms, I think somebody told me they actually have it going backwards or the wrong speed or something on the MR and the Vegas is more accurate in that regard.

I've played with the Vegas comm a lot, so the gloss is wearing off and the grid is getting darker, so it is starting to look somewhat more authentic. :)

Also flipping it open a lot eventually loosened the internal "brake" that kept the antenna grid from going back all the way. In its original condition the grid only opens about 90 degrees, which is too little. Now the grid flips all the way arond, which is actually more like the real prop for most of the run of the series.

I have both, and the MR just sits in a case. I play with the Vegas comm all the time. Great cheap version. Sound is not as good as the MR, but is still better than the IPI and slightly less than the Playmates. IMHO.

the inside parts, motor, gearbox, board also look the same, funny aint it. :angel

the moire direction can be easily changed by reversing the two wires going to the motor, :)

i have one and the MR , it makes me wonder how they both seem so much alike. :rolleyes

i see a little shop in China, MR's going out the front door and STE's going out the back. :lol

but actually i have wondered if they are MR seconds. :(
