Hey guys thanks for checking out my build. I'm new here on the RPF but have been building props and other fun stuff for about ehhh.. a year or so. I'm still learning a ton and I absolutely love this hobby. Its right up my alley. Film Making, Art, Working at the Movies, and this hobby. SO much fun.
Anywho.... I got sidetracked.... OH yea! (Please excuse the pics, I pulled them straight from my instagram photoblog linked on my facebook)
MY Ironman Build!
W.I.P
(Goal of completion 10/26/2012)
Wanting to show off my completed suit the entire weekend of Halloween @ my theater (10/26 - 10/31) on the days I work.
So where to start... Hmmmm Oh I know!
August 24th - August 29th - Started my first Ironman Helmet!
I should have done a bit more research before starting this because holy crap :facepalm being my first Pepakura build this took forever to put together between this and working and had a bunch of errors, but even then I was happy with the outcome for a first build.
First Day progression....very slow...
Annnddd 3 days later....
So now that I finished the Helmet I immediately out of excitement (the next day) went out and got some fiberglass resin and cloth and coated it in a nice.... big coat of resin... messing up alot of gluing when the resin started to cure.
Slightly disappointed from the warping but nothing that was gonna stop me.. I let the resin cure fully and started bondo and sanding work later on in the night...... up until my sander ( which I was stupid and didnt buy insurance on) broke. I took it upon that sign to call it a night
The next day I laid some $1 flat black spray paint on to help find the large amounts of imperfections and started back on sanding and bondo work.
After my back started to kill me I went inside and decided @ that moment. I was going to be Ironman for Halloween. SO I printed out a nice large batch of pepakura files. Only this time I learned not to print everything out. I printed out only the right sides and center pieces of armor so that way I didnt waste paper if something was to small to fit my tall lanky body.
(September 1st)
So all the armor printed out I started on the MRK IV Chestpiece and finished assembling the same day.
(September 3rd)
Also the same day I did a bunch more Bondo work and cut out the eyes and face plate on the helmet that was going to be used as a desktop display and also put inside our Theaters Box Office window for the re-release of "The Avengers" before its DVD release later in the month.
After waiting 3 weeks for my L.E.D lights from China to arrive. Which got held for processing for a week and a half. I decided to play with the eye lights a bit. (September 5th)
I just about finished (also know as got frustrated enough) with bondo and sanding that I called it done on the helmet and moved along to painting. (September 6th)
The next day (September 7th) I started painting! This is when I really started to love this hobby. As soon as the paint set and I could hold this thing I went crazy. :lol I even remember holding the helmet out like in Hamlet and quoting its famous lines.
Nerdy yes I know.
AND THENNNNNNN.... A few hours later! I was done! Lights and All.
Like I said not perfect but for my first build I was and still am proud of myself.
The next day I got to put my Helmet out in our box office window and (living in a small town) everyone asked where we bought it.
No one believed me when I told them I made it out of paper until I showed them pics on my phone. I got so many complements and people asking to hold it and check it out. I was super happy to see my hard work being admired... and... even criticized.
(September 8th)
(September 11th)
I started making a cheap Arc Reactor after watching one of The great Stealths videos. I couldnt find a coffee tumbler with the right lid around my area so I looked around at some of my can goods in the pantry to size inside of the chest piece and landed on some cheap spaghetti sauce.... That night I had spaghetti.
I cut the can down to size and melted down some plastic on top of the can to get the right shape. (Outside of course!) Used some wayyyyy to big copper wiring and a bag of assorted keyrings I got from walmart for a few bucks.
(September 12th)
I heard that ladies like men with big arms... So... I made some nice biceps
(September 14th)
Another Stealth inspired build. I knew with all the armor coming up I needed somewhere to store it.. Duct Tape Mannequin time! Goodness it sucked being wrapped up in that stuff. And even worse. My girlfriend couldn't figure out how to cut me out of it.. She was terrified she was gonna stab me so she insisted on slowly cutting me out just using the tip of the dull tipped scissors. I was in that thing for almost a hour and a half. I thought surely I was gonna lose a limb.
As soon as my right arm was free and I had a little mobility I took over the scissors and cruised my way out of that Duct Tape suit.
And then I put my armor progression on it and neatly set it to a corner.
(September 19th)
Between the gap I worked on a present for my boss. Him being a huge Judge Dredd fan and the movie coming out I made him a Judge Dredd (Comic Style) Helmet. Seen here.
As you can see I went for a Battle Damaged Helmet mainly because I wanted to keep cost down and I wanted to get back to Ironman.
SO any ways September 19th I Fiberglassed many pieces and put together most of the torso and the right arm (which I have on the wrong side) :facepalm
Another Large gap between working and not updating
(September 27th)
I worked alot over the past 2 weeks. Not so much on Ironman but @ the theater. but I did progress a bit. Cod piece (not pictured) and more fiberglassing done.
(September 28th)
I progressed with putting together more armor with the rest of the left arm and the hand plates.
(October 4th)
Still building a few pieces I decided it was time again to make the helmet. This time big enough for my big melon, padding, servos, and hinges.
4 hours and a Nap later I was done. This time learning that sanding and bondo work on the ears and the edges around them is a nightmare I left them off and decide to bondo them in once I finished the rest of the bondo work on the helmet. (Thanks to JayMay for that)
Happy that this one fit I went and checked it out in the mirror. Only to realize... crap this is going to be Unproportional to the rest of the suit. Scaled up 10% from the original. But I decided to tough it out. At least Ill have room inside for everything.
(October 7th)
Fiberglassed the outside of the helmet cut out the eyes, ears and the face plate. And started cutting out the Right Shin.
(October 9th)
Laid in fiberglass cloth and resind the inside with 2 layers and one more outter.
Later on I just about finished bondo work on the chest piece and primed it up to help look for any imperfections. Which there still are a few.
Later on in the night after tons of bondo and sanding I called it a night about 3 am and took a pic of all the progression throughout the night.
(October 11th)
WAR Machine Day! Took a day off Ironman to make a helmet for the first time in foam... annddddd... I liked that I progressed fast but hated the final outcome. It was rushed and I didnt shape the foam enough with the heatgun and didnt seal it with glue good enough so again battle damaged but meh it was a quick fun project to play with. Im ok with it, may sell it to someone around town for a few bucks. Going to make a good one after Halloween.
(October 12th)
Finished Bondo and Sanding on Chest piece other than detailing with dremel and needle file.
(October 13th)
Started on my second set of hands since the first was to small for my large hands and they fit ok. Also I finished bondo and sanding on the Abs section and laid down some primer. At this point I realized how much time I had so from here on everything was going to have to be fast paced and I couldnt take as much time on sanding and bondo as I have been. I decided everything again... was going to have to be battle damaged in order to finish before the deadline.
Also I started to upgrade my Arc Reactor and threw on some base color coating to save some money on the High Quality Paint later.
(October 15th)
While cutting and gluing together the Right Shin and Right Thigh I put all the Armor on the mannequin to see my progression thus far. I realized then I am a little behind but damn am I eager to see this thing completed and then move on to the next big project in which I can actually take my time on.
(October 16th)
I Cut out the right shoe and to my suprise it fits on my size 12 foot. Yay. I also continued and finished my Arc Reactor Upgrade. Which I am EXTREMELY Happy with.
I used a roll of electrical tape as a stencil and cut out the inner parts out of foamcore poster board and took a drill and cut out all the slot of the inner piece. Lifted the ring up with some foam and hot glue.
Super happy with the out come.
(October 17th)
Finished bondo and sanding on the face plate. Melted down some plastic to the proper eye pieces and cut out slots to see out of the eyes. Tested out some LED lighting. Also I did a Ton of work on the Lower back (Sanded, dremeled details in, Primed and base coated), upper back (primed ready for base coat) Cod Piece (fiberglassed), Right Thigh and Calf (Fiberglassed) and Right Shoe ( Fiberglassed)
We Will see what tomorrow... errmmmm later today holds in store for me.
Sorry for the really big first post. Just taking a break from building and about to hit the sack.
Thanks for checking out my thread and Thanks for being so awesome RPF'ers!
