Attempting a Hinge system.. it will in the end be using a servo to open and close..
  • casting upper and lower arms
  • a base to attach to the helmet
  • 4 chicago screws

Re: Ironman Helmet hinge

When you perfect it. Will you being doing a run of it. I would so pay to have the tools/parts to have my helmet open & close electronically.

Looking good. A few things to think about when making the hinges:

1. The helmet is curved, so straight hinges might not work in all conditions.
2. All pivot points need to be parallel to each other (pain in the butt with curved helmet).
3. A double hinge is a good start, but won't give you full control of the faceplate position at all points of the open/close.
4. Positioning the second hinge so it doesn't show while open/close.

It took me almost 4 months for me to develop something I liked. I didn't get to devoted until the last few weeks. I had Autocad on my side and a little advice from a mechanical engineer. My hinge system has 4 binding posts aswell, but I also have the chin hinge, so that was an extra 3 binding posts. For the left and right side, A total of 14 binding posts and 6 hinge pieces all in the temple area.

Re: Ironman Helmet hinge

important is the way the servo need to move.

seams that the linear servo is not enough to do it

Re: Ironman Helmet hinge

My experience said that the stronger the better, in my helmet I use two 10kg servos, 3kg torque one is in the limit.

Re: Ironman Helmet hinge

Definately paying attention to this thread! Nice to see someone show their method

Yes Im looking at a 40kg servo theres no question that should do it..:)

mmmm... That´s the one I´ve using, I´m pretty sure with a system like yours will work too

HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store : HXT 10kg Servo (metal gear) 55g / 10kg / .16sec

Anyway you´ve got here two another choices, one is 33kg and the another is 19:

HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store : Turnigy S8166M Servo 154g / 33kg / .21sec

HobbyKing Online R/C Hobby Store : VS-11 Vigor Extra Large Servo .19sec / 19kg / 103g

Hope it helps ;)

So did a quick video.. needs some tuning here and there and go from there. I for one dont mind seeing the hinges they will be black.
