Iron Man

Hey guys,

Im Hama from The Netherlands and i've been searching for a whole lot of iron man costumes the past few months....

I've seen alot of cool ones here that are very accurate!

So i tried to make my own Iron man Helmet ( automatized ) tried it for like 7x with paper > Paper maché technique and Turtle Wax but it looked very fake and lame and not even accurate :(

It blows my mind to see how you guys have done it, and i really dont know where to start and what items i should get, im kind of low on cash so i cant afford to keep making new ones and failing at them, so i really want to make a good one now that is automatized aswell.....

On this forum ive seen alot of people talking about something called > Pepkura or something, i dont know if this is a program or an actual physical tool?

If someone would be kind enough to tell me what items i should use and HOW i should do it, i would be very grateful!

Also > My apologies if i posted this in the wrong topic.

Awesome community you guys got, and im deffinetly gonna stick around here :)

Greetings and Thanks in advance.

Hi Hama!

First of all wellcome to our community!!!

I´ve added you to my msn as you requested peer PM. Ask if you need. Yes, pepakura is a software. First goal is to do an helmet you were happy with and later automatize it ;)

Good luck in your journey!!!

You want to try pepakura. Download the program here.
http://www.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/
Go to my thread and download the files posted on the first page, you'll have to unzip them.
http://www.rarlab.com/
http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=80159

You'll need to print those out on cardstock, cut them out and glue them up. The scale on all the files in the zip are for approx 6' guy so if you around that size you shouldn't need to scale em. Try that out if you have any questions feel free to pm me if you need to. :):cool

Thanks Zabana!

I came to the right forum :D!

Im glad there still are good guys like you around who are willing to help a noob out!

Thanks Finhead, ill be sure to do that!

so how do you actually turn the pepakura cardstock glued together stuff into the real thing?

You can check Finhead´s or Stealh thread, also I post it too. We build the model in cardboard, after be harden it with polyurethane resin or resin/fierglass. Once is hard we give final shape and smoothing with bondo and primer.

The 405th forum is a great place to find info about.

Ah Stealth!

I've seen your awesome war machine and it ownz!

I want to make my own War machine :D so if you got any good tips i'd love to hear them!

im also keeping track of your progress on war machine!

BTW in that video of yours Stealth, i noticed the guy got "Resin" and he mixed it with something else but i donno what i couldnt hear it properly?
And i noticed that the "Fibreglass" he used are strips of some kind like paper-ish, its difficult for me in dutch to find fibreglass because i think they use different names for it so is this fibreglass >

And @ Zabana, whats the difference between polyurethane resin and Fiberglass/Resin, wich one will look better and more life-like?

Yep, I finally gave in and started on an Ironman helmet using Dungbeetles pep file. I don't think I would have tried scupting it old school style.

Hama, fiber glass can be three types.
You need to use fiberglass or glass tissue and not fiber wool or glass wool (here in italy is called wool of glass).

THe first one is softer and can be laid withour problems anywhere, in undercuts too.
The second one is tougher but will cause you problems while putting it almost everywhere you have an angle to cover.

Fiberglass is usually known as FIBER GLASS or GLASS RESIN. HEre in italy is called: GLASS RESIN and the fiberglass is the thing I was talking about.

Hope this helps ;)

Also, urethane is for slush casting, that means, making the resin rotate inside a mold. It's quicker, cleaner and a little more expensive. The final risult is a pretty light cast, but it's also fragile.
Fiberglass casts are stronger, but it takes longer to make one, it's messy and it STINKS awefully! Also, you'd need gelcoat to brush as the first coat and then reinforce with fiberglass. This casts are usually heavier.

So this is the one i need > http://link.marktplaats.nl/335568478

We call this Glasweefsel ( literally means Glass Tissue )

is that the one i need?

THAT'S WAY TOO BIG! That's like a...i don't know the english name, but it's not what you need. Look for something thinner...WAY thinner...

Try at any home-depot or home supplier. They should have it.
I think it's called: HARDWARE supplier, something that sells stuff like screws, tools, nails and stuff like that ;)
Get Polyester resin if you wanna use the fiberglass.

Also, if you ever need to get stuff from smooth-on like silicon rubber and urethane plastic, go here:

sorry if i'm being a pain haha
but what exactly are the steps in this "pepakura" stuff.
i know that you gotta print the stuff out and cut it up and glue it together
then what? what exactly is 'resin'? and what do you do after that? how do you get to the finished product?
