Hi

I have a charity event at work and its fancy dress. so i wanna go as Ironman! (just like many other on this board ive gathered!) but there is a catch, its on august 7th, thats less than 2 weeks away!

so my plan is to make it fast, and make it cheap. my medium is my old favourite CARDBOARD :) gonna make it all out of cardboard, then cover in pvc tape for strangth and to make it smoother (also this tape is cheap and easy) then spray paint it and hopefully bob will be ya dads brother na dill have a finished suit in no time, but we will see (as my cardboard endo ended up takin far longer than expecxted)

i have started on the torso and will post up some pics tomorrow, but for now i will call it a night and in the morning make some more and order some leds for the eyes and the arc.

also i want (if there is time) a motorized face/visor thingy. any idea on how this is best achieved?

laters!

speed builds are fun and stressful at the same time. how you planning to do the helmet? Ive got some paper templates for hinges that i can give ya to try, let me know if your interested.

hello again.

so far ive finished the upper torso (in cardboard anyway, will add pvc tape to it all once every part is complete) also done rough arms (they are very basic for now) now i must state that it is by no means screen accurate and is an interpretation of all of the different ironman armours. i used various pics as reference and also pics of other members iron man armours so its gonne be a bit different, but pretty much the jist. a quick couple of pics:

upper torso

quick pic of the whole thing thus far being worn by me :)

since ive taken these pics ive also made the codpiece and started on the flexi ab section. none of what you see is final and some parts will be tweeked before i add the tape and paint it depending on how it all looks when it is together (which i wont know until all parts are made!)

as for the helmet i dont know how to hinge it so any help wud be apprectiated and i wud love to see them hinge templates please!

more to come, only 8 days until it needs to be complete!

thats coming on.. with limited time frames its always cool to see how much people can get done..

keep the progress pics coming

thanks for your comments. ive done some more:

thats all of the main pieces made in rough and they all fit and move as they should. so now its time to make them look more like ironman armour and not just some folded cardboard!

also with the face mech ive been doin some research and it would appear others have used a motor to wind a cable which pulls the face up. sounds like a good plan and one i will be trying.

i have on order some white leds, some blue leds, various switches, velcro and more glue sticks. i already have a servo and wires.

this needs to be complete by this time next week! i think i may have bitten off more than i can chew, but we shall see.

For a fast cardboard build, this is very clean and nicely done!! Good symmetry makes all the difference too and you have that!!

i agree with /\/\/\

the suit looks good alround.. its very easy when rushing things to get the diferent sides totally out of proportion.. how do you find it for moving around..

thanks for your kind words. i agree symetry is very important and it will ruin the whole thing if the left isnt the same as the right so to be sure i make say the laft arm (using tape not glue) then once im happy with it unstick it and trace the parts unpside down to have the parts for the left arm the exact same size :)

wearing it is cool, movement is restricted a little but i can still walk and stuff. this is a very important p[art fo it as i need to be in this suit for about 10 hours next saturday! so it needs to be comfy (ish) and very robust, i dont want a hinge to break or anything so im making sure its gonna be strong.

anyways, i have finished building both arms, all that is left fopr them is minor detailing and then cover in tape and paint. also as with all parts i will fix velcro or buckles where needed once its all done.

my leds and switches are here! and the calves are now done!!! the pics:

i ahve to go to work now, but will complete the thighs when i get home.

update time! been busy building and the thighs are now complete! also i have started work on the abdominal section. here are the pics:

i need to adjust the shpulder pads as they are way too high, but other than that im pretty happy with how its turning out.

moving in it was fine until i added the midsection. i need to adapt it some how so that i can lean forwards as i cant at the moment. but i think i have an idea for that and will try it out tomorrow.

had to stop building now as ive used all 15 glue sticks i had! hopefully the ones i ordered will be delivered tomorrow. if not ill go buy soem extortionatly priced ones from the local store.

after ive fixed the mid section i will make the feet (covers for my shoes)and hands (2 sets in fact as i need to be able to use my fingers at work so will make one pair fingerless), then the fun part, the helmet :) (complete with motorized face if i can figure it out)

i have white leds and blue leds and different pics of ironman show his eyes a different colour, some blue some white o_O

im pretty confident that it will be finished in time provided all goes well and i can get the materials i need.

comment plz

white led's are actually a light blue. thats his true color.

personally i would add material to the shoulder bells till it covers the gaps over your shoulders and biceps, and just attach it to the chest and back with sticks or rivets so it can rotate up and down. itll increase your mobility.

ive sorted out the mid section and it now gives me more mobility, ill be sure to post up some pics later on.

ive also made a start on the feet and have a pair of basic cardboard shoes at the moment and will add the finer details later on.

postie knocked today, i recieved my other switches and velcro but no glue!! so im off to the store to get some as well as red and gold paint :)

the plan for later on tonight is to finish the feet and then start on the helmet! (leave hand until after ive got some gloves to wear underneath then build around them)

the helmet shouldnt take too long i hope, at least not to get the rough shape all sorted. then i will cut the face off and try to work out how to have it open by the press of a button.

thats all for now, time to go watch the a-team! dun dun-dun, dun-dun duuuuuuuuuun!
