Interstellar Patch

Yeah no problem! I have access to one of the highest quality embroidery services in North America. The things they can do are just insane...none of that cheap Chinese embroidery stuff. I just need to choose one and go with it. It would be helpful to know what the majority or people think as well, but perhaps I'll do a sample of each and we'll go from there.

The patch looks embroidered to me. I think the reason the inside looks flatter is because the outside is edged, which is a thicker stitch.

I think you're right! I think the whole interior is a very low profile embroidery. Now, the other thing I'm trying to figure out is whether the endurance ship has a thin grey stroke on the patch just like the concept art from the book. Some of the screen shots seem to show a border, but it could be an illusion:

I also spoke to my embroidery company and if we go ahead and run the patch EXACTLY as in the above concept art from the book (with the grey border surrounding the ship) with all the little irregularities and imperfections, it will look good but they say we may miss some of the fine details...and that it may end up looking like these screen shots from the film suit!!! Which is funny because that's exactly what we want :)

I've created an identical replica of the above concept art in vector format. I also made sure to make the "Space Exploration" text larger, centered and exactly like the movie patch you see.

The only things remaining now are to choose colour of the patch and thread, what should be embroidered and at what height, the direction of stitching for each element, whether the ship has a thin grey and irregular border and size.

I vote for the following:

1) the thick grey border of the patch should be embroidered higher than any of the interior embroidery
2) the ship should have a thin grey border exactly as in the concept from the book
3) rather than having a perfect shape for each part of the ship, I personally think they used a version of the concept you see above and embroidered the patch with the interesting irregularities of the ship. (ie: each ship rectangle has bumps and edges that aren't perfect)
4) The height of the patch should be 4" from bottom tip to the top of the patch
5) I have selected this colour as the blue for the patch:

6) Obviously the film has colour grading so the thread can't be matched exactly. I personally think the main "white" thread from the patch is white, or slightly off white, and the grey thread is something like this:

Any more thoughts would be appreciated :)

PS: If anyone is wondering, I used to be on this forum YEARS ago under a different alias ("Bobo") but my account expired so I now have this one. I made plenty of transactions making circuitry for Boba Fett rangefinders both on here and TDH.

Please let me know when one of these patches are available for purchase. I would love to glue one of these to a hat. :love

Awesome thank you! I think your Space Exploration is a bit off? It's too thick and large. Also, I see you cleaned up the design lines quite a bit which looks nice and symmetrical, but I wonder if the "rough" detail in the original movie concept is more movie accurate?

Glad you're on board! :)
The more people we have, the better this run will be. I'm really looking forward to bringing movie accurate patches to the community and I think I'm 90% there. I also have to look into cost as these will be very high quality, made here in Canada.

Stay tuned! Cheers!

I see what you mean about the Space Exploration text and I agree, as for the detail, I tried to follow the patch from the book but it's not symmetrical, which is fine for a preliminary design but I have to believe they would fix it for the production version. Until someone can get their hands on a production suit, this what we have to work with.

See, I too would believe this until I saw the concept scan from that book. It's not symmetrical, the ship has "ugly" and unclean lines in parts...and it would seem improbable that they would use this for the final patch! However, if you look closely at some of the screenshots from the book, you can see consistent irregularities that follow with this design.

For example:

1) look at the bottom Lander of the endurance. Take a look at the left wing and notice there is no separation between it and the center of the ship. This may be due to the fact that the graphic is too thin at that point, making the embroidery not show up.

2) there is a little bleed-in of the grey outline at this place in the graphic. It looks like the two screenshots also show a darker area which may be the same thing.

Anyway, I would love to see a closeup of the suit that's on display but I'm not sure anyone has taken photos of the patch in good detail? So we either wait for a clearer photo, or we do a run of the one accurate to the concept, or we use a clean version assuming that they used a cleaned up graphic.

I wonder where the suits are now, they were loaned out for the film's opening but that was month's ago? Even if the suits find their way to a prop store, I doubt that I could buy one but it would be cool.

Well, I made it. 4 inches tall. All gone now. 2nd run is coming.

If some of you bought it I hope you liked it.
