Insurance for your props?

Over the last 12 years of prop collecting, I've acquired some nice pieces. So I was thinking about getting an insurance policy on them. Do any of you guys have this? My current insurance company would not cover them, but referred me to a company called American Collectors. They seems rather high, and only had an option of paying 1 payment per year instead of monthly, quarterly, etc.

So do any of you have your props covered by an insurance policy?

So in the reserach you have done...certain possesion are not covered under normal home insurance plans?

How is it categorized? Are they considered toys or the like?

I seem to recall collectibles such as coins and stamps were covered under a normal home insurance plan.

Your homeowners insurance should cover it up to a certain dollar amount under some form of personal property it's usually in the tens of thousands of dollars .......IF for some reason they do not, which I would certainly check with your agent first, you can get specific policies as is the norm with jewelry or gun collections.

Well, you need to talk with Cenobyte. He lost a bunch of stuff in a fire a few years back and he had some high dollar things that the insurance company said were nothing more than toys!

Although, I no longer underwrite Insurance I am still employed by them and you need to get a 'personal articles floater' paf. Basically your house is covered under contents and cool stuff like collectibles and jewelry are not covered. About the only thing it covers is furniture and a few other things. The collectibles insurance company might be a way to go I'm just not sure how they pay their claims etc. With your primary carrier a PAF can be expensive.

An old post but still valid and something many of you should consider. The thought of a fire or flood scares the crap out of me.

Any experience with collectinsure.com. They're a lot cheaper than my primary insurance company but more importantly, its a lot easier than adding a rider for all my collectibles.

We're working on our list of items to insure. It'll still be a couple months before it's done I suspect. Then I think we'll use collectinsure as well. Anyone have experience with a claim with them?

I'd have to double check but I'm 99% sure that some guys I know that collect original art use them and speak highly of them.
