Infra Red

Hi guys-

I searched the topic and found nothing so sorry if this has been discussed before... Anyway I've watched the films numerous times including back-to-back-to-back last week and one thing has always bothered me: I do not think it is possible that the Yautja can only see infra red light. There must be many other wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum they utilize. How else could they have developed such excellent light-distorting camouflage for use on earth? Even without helmet they are able to grab onto outcroppings and navigate terrain which has no temperature difference and would thus be invisible if only using IR. The biohelmet did pick up the searchlights in the cold meat packing warehouse in Predator 2 we all know, but then one still has to explain how the Predator got around the facility without stumbling around or falling down the stairs.

Perhaps there is also some soundwave recognition as well (kind of like the way DareDevil sees even though he's blind). Certainly the language with its clicks could support this theory. Ultrasound imaging can produce detailed topography without any light source - great for night hunting and avoiding traps/projectiles.

One other thing. It would seem to me that if they only used IR their eyes would be quite large and completely black to capture more of the IR emissions.

So, I'm thinking IR is just part of the equation and not the only thing the hunters rely on. Gary Busey's character was really, really wrong (dead wrong as it turns out).

I don't understand how this is still a question... he quite clearly shows in P2 that he can view more than just one spectrum of light. He sits there and adjusts it to multiple types to finally see the UV lamps. The bio helmet is what processes the spectrum by the way :p

Also, I think you're going a bit too nuts on analyzing what is after all, a fictional character from a movie.

You're definitely right. Too much analysis can ruin any movie. I just have one of those quirks that tends to make me dissect everything. Going back to suspending disbelief mode.

I agree with what was already said. I'm only posting to reiderate my stance on explaining everything, and how it cheapens the character(s). For instance, Star Wars and Star Trek. Books upon books have been put out explaining everything about either movie franchise. Why must everything be explained?

Look... he's an 8 ft alien who kills people, and claims their skulls as trophies. That's all you need to know. He's an alien which means; as far as story telling goes; he's not bound by any law or rules as to what he can or cannot do. Unless predetermined in previous films.

They see in what we would define as infra-red. However, due to our technological limits during the making of the films we got a lot of sloppiness associated with OUR infra-red cameras. About the only good thing to come from AVP was the refinement of the "vision mode." It wasn't just red, green, blue and yellow... it was cripser with more defintion. You could make out faces and ****. You got some level of depth perception. Now onto some questions -

How else could they have developed such excellent light-distorting camouflage for use on earth?

They are Aliens. The imagination is the limit as to what they can do. Unless it's stupid.

but then one still has to explain how the Predator got around the facility without stumbling around or falling down the stairs.

No, "One" does not. Or if that's the case, maybe "one" could explain to me how he got from the bottom of the ladder to the top of the roof without making a ******* sound? HE'S AN ALIEN. In any sci-fi alien movie I've ever seen, the ALIEN creature can pretty much do **** that we can't.

Or you know what.. here's a good question - being a creature that's known for leaping from building to building, tree to tree, etc etc. Why, oh why, when he was hanging from the building and off of Harrigans arm did he suddenly become AFRAID OF HEIGHTS?!?!?!!??! Most of that stupid **** can be blamed on the director because he either didn't care, or was passed out drunk during the filming.

Perhaps there is also some soundwave recognition as well (kind of like the way DareDevil sees even though he's blind). Certainly the language with its clicks could support this theory.

Yeah, no. They make clicky sounds, hisses, and grunts. Just because. I would steer clear of incorporating the Predator into comic book mythology. Because it's stupid.

One other thing. It would seem to me that if they only used IR their eyes would be quite large and completely black to capture more of the IR emissions.

Obviously they're not because in each movie we get a good look at their eyes. Aliens.

So, I'm thinking IR is just part of the equation and not the only thing the hunters rely on. Gary Busey's character was really, really wrong (dead wrong as it turns out).

He was wrong for one reason really. So that the creature could foil their plot and skull **** each and every one of them while Keyes "lost his pressure." AND to show the audience that the creature was capable of more than previously thought.

Over analyzing everything takes the fun and fantasy out of it. As passionate as I am about the movies, I don't need; nor want, everything explained to me.

Totally agree with rob.

A: hes alien

B: its a film

dont over analyse it or the fun soon dissapears, just like the pred language, who gives a **** ! :p
