"IF" Robert Downey Jr. retires as Iron Man, what "COULD" Marvel/Disney do to replace/

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

We need a Chinese Iron Man with a super thick accent. Or French. God in Heaven please make the next Iron Man a Frenchie who blurts out "Wee wee and Haw Haw" as he fights.

"Go away, or I shall taunt you a seconda time!"

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

I think RDJ understands that you should always get out of the game before it gets stale. Good for him. :thumbsup

As for the future of Iron Man, let's move on to other heroes. There's plenty to explore out there.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

Damn straight. Let's get a real Daredevil movie. Or better yet, a miniseries. Born Again would now actually be possible, given that the Avengers have all appeared.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

I like Spawn...how are Image comics doing?

What Marvel characters DESERVE their own movie? I think Hulk is always at the top of my list...

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

I seriously can't wait for the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series and Agent Coulson making a full recovery from Loki's attempt at killing him.. maybe RDJ will appear as a cameo maybe not

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

Sad news indeed. But wasn't it always the plan to just re-cast another actor, the way the James Bond movies do it ? I mean it works for 007 so why not here too. Just need to find the right successor !

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

OP's title and first post are both misleading. Unless there's something more up to date than the interview he gave a week ago, and by all means post your source to correct me if I'm wrong, RDJ has not said he is definitively retiring as IM. He simply mentioned he's considered it. I saw that interview as RDJ posturing to get the best financial terms he can get from Disney/Marvel, but obviously other people can interpret that at face value.

Clearly this thread is to discuss possible future moves for Marvel Studios aside from a simple re-casting but let's not state RDJ's retirement as fact when it clearly isn't.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

Yeah, but it is fact, in a sense. At some point, RDJ will cease playing the role, as all actors do eventually. He'll get tired of playing it, and they'll decide that it's prohibitively expensive to keep him on and will recast the character with someone else, or just reboot the whole series, as per usual.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

I'm sure another actor will come along, but in my mind RDJ is Tony Stark. Hell in Russia there was actually an interview who had to stop mid sentence because they started to call him Tony. The man made the role, and what a emotional moment having Stan The Man Lee telling RDJ that he is exactly who he envisioned Tony Stark to be.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

That is brilliant as well, probably the best option in fact, if they wanted to keep Iron Man around that is. Thanks Rock :)

That could work. Back in the 90s Tony was crippled and remotely controlled the suits, they could do that and either get Downey to voice them or get a sound alike. No need for tony on screen. It's not like there isn't 70 years of marvel superheroes they can't replace him with those.

Sorta like when Bob Kane told Val Kilmer he was the perfect choice for Batman.

It was Kirby and Don Heck who came up with how Tony looks - I believe he was patterned after Clark Gable. Stan is so full of crap.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

Maybe but Stan is smart enough to kiss the talents arse! :lol

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

sean connery made the james bond character. now, 7 actors later, its still james bond

marvel allready said they will recast the role if rdj stops doing it.
there is no speculation there, as long as those movies make more money than they cost, they will get made.

This thread is mainly here to discuss what COULD be done to replace RDJ as Tony Stark, I never said it was a fact that he was retiring as Iron Man, I'm only going off the interview I read from 3 different sites. His contract is up and he stated he's unsure whether or not he would up it again as there are other movies hes had interest partaking in but couldn't as he was working on The Avengers and then Iron Man 3... Nothing misleading about it I agree with Solo, one day he's going to get sick of playing a main role, thats what I was expressing in my original post :\ Don't go around saying I'm stating facts when that clearly is not the case. :p

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

Sorta like when Bob Kane told Val Kilmer he was the perfect choice for Batman.

The difference is that Bob Kane was WAY off base when he said that. As far as I'm concerned, RDJ "is" Tony Stark and they'll never be able to re-cast the role with anyone better.

At the time there were lots of people who didn't think so.

When they first cast Tony Stark and I found out it was RDJ - I thought it was a bad choice. Sounded like they were finding someone who fit Starks substance abuse and going with that only - Also - I grew up in the 80's when RDJ always played the annoying back ground characters - Weird Science, Back to School, The Pick Up Artist, Less than Zero - I liked him in Heart and Souls but thought, wow, that little guy is playing Iron Man?? Then one day I was switching around and had forgotten he was in Air America - not a good film, but he was not a teen anymore and I liked it. Then when I saw Iron Man - I couldn't see anyone else in the part that he made his right from the word GO. I'm wondering if he's doing this in fear of type casting -- he has to be making boats of money. I can only hope he's learned NOT to try and bluff Marvel - they'll replace him like an old pair of shoes - same as they did with Roady. They also took Sam Jackson to town when he wanted more money. They are shrewd businessmen.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

Hell at $50 mill a movie he'd be insane to try and get anymore out of Marvel, I agree with Brent RDJ IS Tony Stark, no matter how hard they try no one will ever be able to fill the shoes and the suit that RDJ may leave behind.

Re: Robert Downey Jr. retiring as Iron Man :(

Shatner IS Kirk. Nimoy IS Spock. Connery IS Bond.

None of this matters if there's money to be made. To insist that there's only one actor that can embody a role is a terribly "fan-boy" way of looking at things. There is nobody that you/we can ENVISION as Tony Stark, but the actor is out there if they choose to go that route.
