I know that the movie Jaws is a classic, but!!!

Watched the remastered cinema release the other week with my thirteen year old son. I thought it held up very well, and my son loved it. He said afterwards that he preferred the practical FX to the CGI he's used to.

I don't think the acting can be faulted really and the whole film is so well crafted that the few shots where the mechanical shark doesn't quite look right don't spoil the action.

Personally I cannot sit through the Godfather. I have tried a few times.

I am looking forward to the Jaws Blu Ray tho. I am certain it will look dated but I have a lot of nostalgia for the era. The Jaws at Universal studios scared the CRAP out of me as a young kid.

If anyone has the chance to see this on the big screen - do it. It's designed for that aspect ratio with your eyeline at water level, it really feels like you're in the sea with a big sky above you and who knows what below.

A lesson learned in the RPF; Do not express your own opinion, people are quick to put you on the 'Dumb, Immature" category in a second....

I think there might be another lesson to be learned here. If you are going to buck the tide, you might consider taking more than 5 seconds to post your thoughts as a single sentence that decry's a movie like Jaws as "crappy." If you don't like it, give a bit more thought to your argument and give some good reasons behind why you feel the way you do. People may still disagree with you, but if it looked like you weren't just going for a sensationalist posting, you probably wouldn't get such knee-jerk reactions.

You are completely right, I for once do take constructive criticism as a good thing, I was not trying to be sensationalist, Lesson learned...

i noticed through the years that watching 70's films in pan 'n scan looks pretty bad. always watch it in widescreen if you can
but that's probly less an issue nowadays. i still have an old square tv with a big heavy picture tube in it....

You know, it's because of Jaws that I won't swim in the ocean...

I know I'm not the only one - in fact I think that there's a whole generation out there who had 'playing in the water' ruined when that little boy was ripped off the floating raft and eaten while everyone else played in the water!!

I always looked at JAWS as one of those movies that you couldn't help but love and be scared of. I'm 40 now so I was little when it came out and I still have a fear of the ocean today due to this movie. Now, with that being said I was talking about this movie with several people I worked with who were in their early 20's and NONE of them had seen this movie so I offered to lend it to a couple of them.

After a viewing I asked them what they thought and hands down all of them told me that they thought it was slow moving, boring and the bad FX on the shark made the movie unwatchable. Every single one of them. None of them even mentioned Quint's speech about the Indianapolis.

So is JAWS as great as it is because when we saw it there really had not been anything else like it out there? The kids today have seen a million shark movies with people being gobbled up. Personally I think the movie is brilliant and a classic regardless of what this group of young folk thought of it and just blame their reactions on them being force feed 20 years of CG and Bay-splosions as being the accepted norm.

Flagg, while I agree that your post is spot on, I think that (as with many things) that it's sad to that younger generations both don't and can't 'get-it' the same way we did growing up.

An episode of 2 1/2 Men comes to mind where Charlie and the kid are sitting on the sofa watching Jaws - the kid turns and says "this movie sucks...it's been 30 minutes and we still haven't seen the shark..."

The generation of ADD/ADHD kids has flooded the market and anymore, it's my belief that the direction of media and tech is more to accommodate them than improve the lives of everyone.

The concept of a 'slow buildup of suspense' is all but lost because hardly anyone has the patients to 'wait for it'.

Damn...now I really appreciate the older things that I still love ie. I watched Superman (1978) last night again for the 100th time and LOVED it.

I agree..older films had a nice slow buildup which allowed us to CARE about the characters and feel connected.

By the way..since you just watched Superman...did you see this?

I certainly agree about the attention span thing. My Wife's kid cannot watch TV or a movie at home without having his Ipad plastered in front of him so he can text and send messages back and forth non-stop with his peeps. Spends more time looking at the Ipad than the movie. Drives me nuts. Watch the frigging show or GTFO. I've actually thrown him out of the living room during movies because of the frantic jumping and clawing for his ipad the second it chimes he has a new message. I live with you, there isn't ANYTHING going in your life that is THAT important.

I also wonder how much of it is the kids just being kids and refusing to like these movies because their parents or older people do. Perhaps down the road they will watch these again and think better of them. Probably not, but hope springs eternal.

My Son is 14 and watches older films on netflicks,he prefers them to newer stuff.
i saw jaws the 1st time it was on video and it scared the bejesus outta me,does it hold up?...
Yeah along with Star Wars, the Great escape. The italian Job,it's a story that could happen,it preys on the primal fear of the unseen, and the lack of movement man has in water.
It's held it's head above water and always will, just wait and see

JAWS is one of my ten all-time favorite films, and I'm old school, some of the others on my list date back to the 1930s/40s on up. I think this film is flawless from beginning to end. Great story, acting, atmosphere, music, etc., etc.

Nonetheless, it's eye of the beholder. If this guy doesn't like it, or liked it once and the luster has worn off over the years and it now seems a dated mess, then so be it.

I'm sure we all have films that we think are garbage that others here worship. That's what makes the place interesting. To each their own.

Whilst I don't agree with the way the OP put forward his arguement, I'm sad to say that I've got to agree with him in a way.

Jaws scared the CRAP out of me when I was younger and I clearly remember being freaked out whenever we went to the beach with the family. There was NO WAY you'd have got me in the sea.

I've got to admit it though (as much as I hate too) that in my opinion Jaws hasn't got the same appeal today, yeah Shaw's speech is still breath taking but it is slow to watch.

I agree though, there does seem to be a sort of ADD generation, recently my local cinema showed the Exorcist and the original TCM, got to admit both films scare the hell out of me to this day. There were kids in there though that laughed all the way through both. One of them actually asked if the TCM was meant to be a comedy??? The general opinion were that they were both boring.
