How to remove Gold Leaf

Hello everyone,

I have a Raider's Idol from Stetler and I bought it gold leafed. I am thinking I may get it gold plated, but I was wondering how I or someone else would have to get rid of the gold leaf. Is this an easy process? Do you think that would mess up the model? You guys are great so I'm sure someone here knows. Thanks a lot in advance.

gold leaf is applied "sizing", which is a varnish, so mineral spirits will get it loose. or any solvent that can be used with varnish.

it's also possible the gold leaf may have finish over it, and if so you'll need to get that off first.

Thanks for replying. So how would I know if there's a varnish covering the gold leaf? Would mineral spirits hurt the model at all? Thanks for your help again. This website has always been so helpful. Thanks again.

If there is any finish on it at all you can tell by just trying to scratch it. If it has no clear on it, that will be easy to scratch. If it has clear, you'll see that the clear scratches first. If it's clear, it could be lacquer or varnish, or anything clear really. at that point you can try the thinner and if it doesn't work, try lacquer thinner. Eventually you'll hit on something that works. The one thing I'd avoid is soaking it by submersing it.
