How can I fasten a badge to a leather jacket?

I am not at all happy with the bendy pinback fastener on the AbbyShot MFP badge, particularly when it comes to attaching it to their Mad Max jacket, which is made of a very thick leather. I would prefer using screw posts, but I can't find any at my local jewelry/crafts store. Using actual screws and nuts is a bit more problematic, as it means shortening (and possibly getting stuck by) the screws. LAPD uniforms use a sort of cotter pin to attach the decorative buttons (post goes through the fabric, pin goes through a hole in the post), which sounds like a good idea, but I don't know where to go for the components.

Any other ideas? TIA.

I would suggest rare earth magnets, one on the badge, one inside the jacket. If the badge itself is made from a ferrous metal, you could probably get away with just the one magnet.

I know the sort of fastener you mention, my old cap badge uses the same method. I've never seen the components in a store so you might have to make your own.

I would suggest brass rod brackets forming the hole round a nail perhaps. For the cotter pin either use brass rod or piano wire.

It looks like the brackets were cast in place on my badge.

To attach the brackets my choice would be two part epoxy paste (not glue) after roughing up the ares where the paste will go on the badge.

Here's a few photos of my badge to give you an idea.

Hope this help in some small way,
Malc.

There are usually 2 types of badges......"pin-back" which what you seem to have, and "lug-back" which uses a large bankers or safety pin (available at any uniform shop). Many cap devices have a screw on pin. I would try the least damaging first to see if it works. I have repaired screw back cap devices by grinding the head down on a small bolt to about 3mm and JB welding into place. You may be able to find replacement screw backs at your local Army-Navy store. Good luck.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think I might have tried RE magnets already because I tried using them to attach a badge to a (very expensive) boot I didn't want to poke holes in. I'll give it another shot. I'm really liking the patch/grommets idea, too.
