in some public restrooms they have mixers to combine cold and hot water
so that the numbskulls at large cannot hurt themselves
the modern ones look nothing like this but it may be an older version of that

No it's for a shower diverter .

You can get them at most old supply shops.

in places where there is not supposed to be a shower, if you just run a pipe off the tub spout water will come out both the tub spout and the shower at the same time. This is put in so the water takes the path of least resistance, just out the tub spout. Then when you hit the diverter the water will force around that little corner and come out the shower head.

I'll see if I can find a place online you can order one.

I disagree with the tub diverter theory, but feel free to prove me wrong- it could be something so old that I've never seen one (ran my own plumbing and heating business for 15 years). What might help, would be ID's on the pipes attached to it- it reminds me of some older gas furnace parts I've seen, but without dimensions, it would be hard to say.

A mixing valve would be arranged differently- this has all 3 pipes on the same plane, where mixers are usually on 2 planes, to save space inside the wall. The clevis hanger that seems to still be attached reminds me again of boiler/ furnace piping, and would indicate it being rather old, as that style of hanger is hardly found anymore in a supply house. The cutting torch is a very good likelihood, but again, it would depend on the dimensions.

Can you post a picture showing more of it, and the inside diameters of the pipes threaded into it? That would help narrow down the list of suspects.

It looks like they are no longer being produced. There is a new copper fitting that you're supposed to us now.

Binder had a bunch of them. http://binderkitchenandbath.com/Call the number and tell him that your looking for that little cast brass fitting that keeps water from coming out of the shower when the tub is running. If he still has any expect to pay top dollar for them.

What do you need the part for ?

Mr.NotWrong is right. This is a plumbing fitting. This is an "elbow diverter" - this is exactly what he describes it as. I used to do plumbing all the time. I hate it,and don't do it,except for plumbing emergencies. The torch is similarly designed to mix the gases, and keep the flame from going back into the head of the torch, and causing an explosion inside the tanks. This is usually an acetylene, and oxygen torch used for cutting.

I believe the original post image was asking about this part:
Usually called a Twin-Ell used in plumbing for older tube/shower connections. Just as MrNotWrong thought:)

I used for one of my Nimbus 3 rifle builds...
