Help: Attaching accessories to a painted piece?

So the title kinda says it all.

I have a helmet that's been primed and ready to paint. Some accessories were placed prior to priming and some will be added separately, such as copper and PVC plumbing parts.

Anyways I've been exclusively using Hot Glue, but I'm noticing some accessories don't seem to be fully bonded to the painted filler, I'm concerned they will detach at a later time, what glue would be best for attaching plastic/metal to a painted filler surface? Shall I stick with hot glue?

You could trace out the specific shape of what you're attaching and sand down the painted part to increase adhesion.

So if possible I should glue to the surface of the filler, and not the paint? Hot Glue should work fine though?

I'd do a stress test with other pieces first just to be sure.
