Helmet painting tips request

I'm embarking on my first project, hopefully a relatively simple paint and finishing job on a resin helmet cast from Fulvio at Pannaus props.

I've removed the flashing, sanded and prepped it for painting following lots of the great tips on here and some of the many youtube vids covering the painting.

My question is, after you have sprayed on the black coat of paint and allowed to dry do you need to sand back or 'key' the areas taking the red paint?

Most people say they spray the red over the black paint layer, but my limited knowledge of spray painting make me worry about the red paint lifting from the black if you don't rough up the surface to give it something to grip to.

I am intending to use auto paints.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts

If you're using the same type of paints you shouldn't have a problem as it will essentially just be another coat. If you do a couple coats of black one won't lift from the other. If its lightly chipped or dinged it might just take the top layer off and reveal black underneath but thats due to damage not the paint lifting.

Thanks for the advice. I think the painting came out really well. Here's some photos of the finished lid

Thanks for the kind comments. I'm really pleased with the way it turned out. I think the Pannaus helmet is my favourite of the fan-made Dredd helmets around.

Might attempt the rather more difficult paint job of a Boba Fett helmet for my next project
