Has anyone tackled Obi-Wan's ANH lightsaber chest?

I've always wanted to make a replica of this chest, as it could easily double as a piece of home furnishing without looking at all out of place as an antique. I've spent many delightful hours doing Google Image searches for Indian Dowry chests (which is what the original is) and I've seen a few that look close, but none have been an exact match.

Has anyone here made a faithful replica of this chest? For a few years now I've contemplated getting into woodworking, though that has been hampered by moving into an apartment in the city so I may have to hold off on that dream for a while yet. But my own limitations aside I'd be curious to see any other makers who may have attempted this project. The original was made of teak and bronze castings as far as I'm aware.

I'm also contemplating making the wooden box that the prop department from TPM made to house the saber hilts. I've watched that behind the scenes footage of Ewan McGregor choosing his lightsaber and I think it would be so cool to have a similar storage box for my prequel lightsaber hilts. That one I might be able to pull off, building inside my apartment.

Not sure if they are long enough but my grandad used to own a pub and had quite the collection of deep maybe five inch high lovely dark solid wood cigar boxes, not like those flimsy ones like today but rich solid boxes and the patina is already there.
I used to use one for my dental tools its now in the living room housing all the remotes.
Also look at microscope boxes and telecommunication cases, all the old utility companies stored their calibration meter elelectric equipment pre plastic came in lovely dark maple type boxes of various shapes and sizes..
Maybe search the old vintage and charity/thrift shops and if accessible the refuse Centre shop ?
We have bought many a wondrous thing destined for landfill..
Good luck with your search.

Hey Psab keel ! I don't believe the Damchiya were made with metal castings. I remember reading up on these years ago and it's all hammered metalwork. The trick is the auction houses all seem to create their own accounts of what material was used in the the metalwork. Some list "teak and iron", others "brass", and I've always thought it looked more like copper.

It'd be fun to get someone in-the-know to take measurements of Obi-Wan's Box... assuming it's still in the ranch.

And if they could flip it over and sand a hidden bit of the metal to remove its patina and discover what type of metal was used to create it, that would be fantastic!

If you're interesed in seeing what skill level you have, go to your local hardware store that stocks K&S metal sheets, pick up a couple of 'em, brass and copper, and a nail setter set (any metal rod that you could put a rounded point on would do), several nails, and a 2x4. Bring it all home. Nail the sheets to the 2x4 (we'll assume you have a hammer. If not, head back to the hardware store ;) ). Take a sharpy, a pencil, or some sort of scribe and lay out a simple design of dots and lines. Use the hammer and the nail setter set to tap in your design. Don't strike the sheet too hard or you'll go right through it like you did while nailing it to the 2x4! You can also experiment with annealing the sheets before nailing them to the 2x4.

Now, times all that tapping by several thousand, and you'll have some idea of the amount of effort and skill you'll have to execute to complete an authentic Obi-Wan Kenobi Lightsaber Storage Box.

I think the "woodworking" portion of this will be the easy part.

Good Luck if you try it! Please post up some photos if you do.

p.s. Here's a link to K&S...

I'm going to put this link here just so that I don't drive myself crazy looking for, and saving, pics again, which I started to... escpecially the ones I've already saved and posted here on TheRPF. ;) YAY DUPLICATES! ....

WOW! Good thing I saved the dimensions in one of the images last night, the auction link is dead this morning!

If we're to believe what they had listed, the dimensions are 25.5" x 19" x 19.5".
