Harry Potter question

Ok, I'm going to nerd out here for a bit, so please forgive me. I've been rewatching Harry Potter and actually reading the books for the first time. I've only read the first two books and just finished watching Prisoner of Azkaban, so not sure if this is explained, but if there is such a thing as a "time turner" why in the hell didn't one of the wizards use it to go back and kill Voldemort? Are they that stupid? And please don't explain it with they are just books/movies!

It's just a movie dude!...........:lol

Just kidding. If you remember in the book and movie it pretty much shows that what ever you do has allready happened. The Griffin did not die the first time(but harry and the gang thought so) and harry thought that it was his dad that came back and saved him at the lake but in fact it was himself.
Thats how i see it at least.

There are certain restrictions on what you can do. Even though that would have helped, I supposed Dumbledore would not have wanted them to do that, that way it could be up to Harry in the future.
@contec, Buckbeak is a Hippogriff, not a griffin.

Well, that creates a paradox. If Voldermort is dead, why would you go back in time to kill him. Dumbledore said to be cautious when traveling back in time... in fact, it seems like something most of the magic community seems to stay away from. They also may be quite rare.

I honestly don't remember if it explained it in the book but I believe you can only use the Time Turner for short hops, which is why Hermione was only going back an hour or so in each case to get to classes that were taking place at the same time.

They made it out to be a very serious and dangerous thing. Lots of risk associated with it, etc. If you ran into yourself you could go mad, etc. You'd think they'd have addressed that question in the books - why not go back waaay back and have dumbledore NOT permit him to enter hogwarts in the first place, for example

Actually it's because Voldemort set up an inverse Tachyon field, routed through Malfoy's wand blocking them from traveling to the past. Also for a trip that far back, Harry couldn't get his Firebolt up to 88 mph, and the one time he did try it, he slammed into a Police Call Box.

True, but if they could have just reversed the polarity of the neutron flow...

I always loved what was posted on Cracked a long time ago, and makes total sense:

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

If Harry decided to do nothing, nothing, after his name was picked from the Goblet of Fire, there's really no way anyone could have forced him to compete. Even if the judges insisted upon obeying a magic cup and entering Harry into every event, he could have stayed home and watched the whole thing on Pay-Per-View, scoring a solid zero points at each tally. Seriously, what was the cup going to do to him if he didn't participate? Kill him? Apparently not, since he shows up late for one event and the cup wasn't coming after him with a dagger or anything.

Hell, Hogwarts wouldn't even have had to lose their chance at the title, since they would still have had Edward Cullen competing in the game. Who, incidentally, would also not have been killed if Harry had backed out of the tournament.
We can also probably assume that any reprimand that Harry might have received for brazenly defying the orders of magical kitchenware would likely have been revoked after it was revealed that his competing would have led inevitably to the release of a powerful supervillain, and to Snape killing Dumbled

Use of time turners is highly restricted and it took jumping through a LOT of hoops for Hermione to be allowed to have one. As the book goes on, you can also see that it takes a major toll on her mentally as the stress of being in two places at once starts to get to her.

However, the primary question is similar to the age old question: if time travel is possible, do you go back in time and kill Hitler before he can open the camps, etc?

The fact is, by doing so you might open the door to something much worse. We can never know all the ramifications if we attempt to change the past. Sure, Voldemort might've been gone, but that doesn't mean all would be well, not by a long shot. It's because of that uncertainty that Dumbledore would never attempt to use a time turner to do such a thing.

OK...I've got a question..If Hogwarts is impossible for a Death Eater to get into due to all it's protective charms etc..how come Barty Crouch Jnr can just walk in after taking pollyjuice potion...seems getting in is not so hard after all!

I don't believe no one ever said it was 'impossible' for a Death Eater to get onto the grounds. It's just very, very difficult. The only thing they have definitively said you cannot do to get onto or off of Hogwarts grounds is apparate/disapparate.

Polyjuice potion doesn't just make you look like that person, down to the genetic level, you ARE that person.
