HAL9000 interface (first prop build)

Hi everyone, welcome to my build of a HAL9000 interface from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Before I get started, I would just like to say a big thank you to AP 333 for all the research and resources that they have made available here on the forum. Thanks to their thread I have had a good starting point from which to attempt my first ever prop build, as well as a great source of inspiration. I know that (for now at least) I will not be able to match their screen accuracy, but for a small budget project I think I am on the right track.

So enough talking, here are my progress pics so far:

My next step is to finish the outside frame and shorten the smaller lens housing, whilst I am waiting on a mitre box to finish the main lens housing, then (weather permitting) it will be onto paint.

As I mentioned earlier, this is my first build (sure not to be my last) and I welcome any questions, comments or constructive criticism.

Thanks for taking a look at my thread.

Hi!
Looking so good so far!
So, where are you going to put this on.
Don't put it in your car. It may conquer your driving!!:lol

Hi Yuumi, thank you for stopping by!

I think I will be putting him on the wall next to my computer once finished, I am hoping that he won't have a bad influence on it!

My Mitre box arrived today so I have progressed on the main lens, as well as fitting some more of the outside frame and managing to split the MDF a bit. Oops.

Well I will keep pushing on and get some more photos once there is a bit more visible progress.

If all goes well I should (mostly) be finished by Friday!

Hi everyone,

Some progress has been made!

HAL is basically now ready to be painted, all I need to do before hand is seal some screw holes in the MDF with PVA.

Here is an assembled shot:

as well as a shot to show off the LED:

As always, comments/questions welcome.
Thanks for taking a look.

Hi all,

Looking good so far!
Thank you!

wow, very impressive. Not something you see very often. Keep up the good work.
Thanks very much, I will!

Looks good!
Thank you, too!

ME WANNNNTTTTT!!!!!

Details on the lens you used?
No it's mine! :lol Lens is a mish mash of bits, see below!

Progress:
I doubt there will be any painting today, the weather has decided that it is going to snow and I can only spray outside. No matter, everything else is done.

I have had a couple of requests for a parts list for the lens that I have built, so here it is:

attachment.php

attachment.php

1 x Rolson Illuminated Magnifying glass 64mm (Used for the main lens, the ‘focus ring’ and I used some of the wiring for the LED). The handle has been cut off and the screw/LED holes in the ring filled. {a}

1 x Visico 82mm to 95mm step up lens adaptor ring (Used for the outer silver lens trim [needs to be painted still]) {b}

1 x Small length (about 14mm) of Acrylic tube inside diameter 64mm, outside diameter 70mm (Used for main lens housing) {c}

1 x 26mm high domed acrylic watch crystal (Used for the smaller internal lens) {d}

1 x Black rubber seal from a 1/14” Basin and Vanity waste seal set (used for the internal of the main lens) {e}

1 x ½” Pillar tap washer (not rubber, is a soft flexible plastic). This is the only piece that actually needs trimming to make it fit (Used inside the black rubber seal {e} to house the smaller lens housing) {f}

1 x Halogen light bulb changer tool from a fancy light fitting, this was the only ‘found item’ as such, so I don’t know where you would get one. It could probably be made with two hollow tubes. One end is larger then the other and the measurements are Length 10mm x Diameter 24mm for the smaller half and L10mm x Diameter 26mm for the larger half. {g}

Once you have all the bits, you will need to add a cable/zip tie around {a} for the knurled ring and find something to block up the smaller end of {g} to house the LED. Then once painted just attach the lens {a} onto {c} and {d} onto {g} and its done.

Hope this is of help to anyone looking at giving HAL a go.

Any questions, feel free to ask and thanks for looking!

Thank you Yuumi!

I choose those materials to keep the costs down as well as allow me to make another without too much hassle. It's fun wondering around the store looking at random items thinking 'will this work for a HAL lens?'.

I will let him talk as long as he behaves! I have ordered a small sound recorder that I am going to put a couple of movie quotes on to fit behind the speaker grill, I don't think that the quality will be great but it should do for now.

Thank you for showing me the HAL in Japan, do they sing when you turn them off? :lol

Progress is still stalled thanks to the snow, once it stops I should be able to finish him off.

I think it's a important concept for a movie prop maker. Low budget high return. It often come up with some good idea.:thumbsup

It is also an important for my wallet. :)

One good thing has come from the snow, it is giving me the time to look into a new project! :lol

Hi all,

With the Snow finally stopping, and some time off work at the weekend, I finally got to paint HAL up! Here are a couple of photos, will get some more taken once I get some better lighting.
