Anyone knows what font that is?

Let me check around; I might have this one (I've got a LOT of fonts laying around!).

I've looked around, and I don't have it; but, according to the '1966 Batman Message Board', it's an Old English variation: maybe something called 'Excalibur'. But, the speculation is that it was hand-painted, and therefore might not be an established font.

If that was the original show, it was almost certainly painted by hand using a variation of old English font. Graphic shops back did so by hand unless there was a large en mass production of such an item, which then would use a paint template. If you really want to make it accurate, you might want to just correct the image for the angle and make your own template directly from the graphic shot.

yeah back then all hand done I'm sure. It would look good carved out and then painted for that relief.

It looks sort of like the font 1456Gutenberg. There's a style of medieval gothic fonts that are close. My recommendation is to scan dafont.com -- they let you put in your own sample text and check fifty fonts at once, like so.

You guys are right,

I just checked my 2.000 + fonts but without 100% match. The capital letters are always different.

I've tried www.whatthefont.com a few times, but without much success.

there wouldn't be a 100% match on a hand painted sign anyway. Like most fonts , you would have to change them a bit to make them work. With the straight one look it would be an easy one to take into illustrator and do a good outline for a template.
That's what I love about handpainted signs...they are " handpainted" lol
