Getting ready for Steampunk theme dance

I posted already this at 405th but I figured you guys would have a little more experience in this kind of project

So my girlfriend and I have been getting ready for a steampunk dance at a con in Houston coming up here pretty soon and even though our costumes aren't completely done I thought I'd share where we're at right now. All of about 16 hrs of work.

Both of us wanted a steampunk monacle (right for me left for her). So I built a couple. Both have powered gears and hers being made second and more advanced has a powered rotating lens and a flip-up secondary lens. I like to think of mine as the clunkier prototype. All of it minus the battery cases were made from scratch parts I already had laying around.

Hope you guys like, comments and crits welcome as well as any ideas to add additional things to our costumes. I could use a good source for a cheap waistcoat and bowler...or top hat.

For clothing tips and resources, check out the Steamfashion group on LiveJournal. We have a lot of talented costumers as well as vendors in the group.

Great job on the monocles. There's been some grumbling in the steam community about the overuse of the "brass goggles" cliche in the genre, but I have yet to see anything that's actually mechanic for eyewear. Awesome! That will be a standout for sure. :)

You also ought to think about hitting Dragon*Con in Atlanta over Labor Day. We overloaded the steampunk panel rooms last year. :)

Thanks for all the great comments. And for the help with pointers.

After wearing armor all the time I'm thinking my steampunk costume will be my perfect "do-stuff" outfit for cons. Really hard to watch movies or participate in a lot of activities with a helmet on.

Also got a new waistcoat to replace my old ones that I've gotten too big for. Was really hard to find locally though. You'd think people didn't know what the 3rd piece in a 3 piece suit was.

Small update with new scratch and found parts. And with a busted up knee I now have a good character excuse for a cane.:lol
