Hi, big Song of Ice and Fire fan here. Wanted to give you a little information.

Valyrian Steel originally got the rights to make weapons and armour from the book series before HBO even optioned the series.

Hence all the weapons designs were based off actual descriptions from the books. Martin was kept apprised of the progress throughout the design phase and signed off on each step before the final pieces were produced.

They are pretty accurate to the book obviously but with some limitations. Ice for example was described as a blade that was as wide as a man's hand and taller than Robb. Robb at the time of this description in Game of Thrones was a 14 year old and likely a big one being a Northman. It's hard to make a sword that long and be marketable but they came out with a 55 inch version that's not bad.

They've also come out with Damscus versions which are high carbon steel versions that need to be oiled for upkeep. These are higher end models and more expensive and limited. The Damascus Ice for example is also 2 inches longer. The material used which is real Damascus steel (something which Martin used as inspiration for the Valyrian Steel in his books) which costs a bit more.

Needle is a bit of an anomaly in the sense that it has no Damascus equivalent but for whatever reason they decided to make it out of high carbon steel. As such that is the only regular version that needs to be maintained as well.

Martin actually sent Needle to Maise Wil who plays Arya on the HBO series as a gift and there are some nice photos of her posing with it.

Finally, about a month or so ago, Valyrian Steel also gained the rights to reproduce the weapons and armor from the HBO series as well. They may also do Damascus versions of the appropriate blades.

So if you are patient, you will eventually be able to get a licensed and fully accurate Needle from the HBO series as well.

What is MORE accurate or "true to the vision" of George Martin is a bit of a toss up. Remember that Martin was NOT consulted when they made the weapons and armor for the HBO series and there are certain issues and compromises that had to be made when making this type of prop for shooting. The designs that Valyrian Steel originally came up with are FROM THE SOURCE MATERIAL and was approved PERSONALLY by Martin.

Personally, because of this, I tend to favor the "book" versions more but I appreciate the movie versions too.

Overall, I'm glad that Valyrian Steel got the license. They are a good, trustworthy, and professional company. Of course, my dream company to land the gig would have been Albion Swords who makes the best real swords in the world. But then their swords would costs thousands each and be out of reach of all but the most dedicated and die-hard fans.

Hope that helps a bit.

Oh . . . and great work on your Needle by the way. :)

Dennis

This is all pretty good info, the only thing I wasn't aware of was that Valerian got the rights to the HBO weapons. Do you have a link to a source of more info about that or did you hear it through the grapevine? I'd hate to have wasted so much time, especially since those swords will be much more screen accurate than mine. Mine is really just a 1-off gift for my girlfriend and I'm not planning on manufacturing them, so it was a worthwhile project for me, but I was kind of hoping those swords would be stuck in limbo a little longer. Any info would be appreciated.

Re: Game Of Thrones Needle Sword WIP- **Updated pics 3/7**

Looks like that is the case:
Replicas from HBO’s® series Game of Thrones® » Valyrian Steel - Swords from George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire”

I was fully expecting Museum Replicas to pick up the license. I don't know whether I'm more giddy or terrified that one of the things on their to-do list is the Hound's helmet. I'd probably impoverish myself to get one, but I'm pretty much there already!

Deadringer, even with the resin issues, it looks like you're making great progress. I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.

Otter, the resin issues are because there is a small hole in the bottom of the mold, Im in the process of fixing that though. With the viscosity of the wax, it doesnt seem to leak, only when I pour it in resin. once I finish fixing the mold Ill repour it in resin again. The bronzes should be back within a week or so, they charge me a minimum price because the pieces are so small, i may have them make me a few copies next time i make a wax. but i gotta see how the first one comes out. I cant wait to assemble this thing and see how it looks. The scabbard is also almost done, but I dont have pics of that at the moment.

Wow, finally finished this project, I learned a whole crapload of stuff and im really happy with how it turned out. As far as screen accuracy, i took quite a few liberties and have since seen some more reference photos that show my inaccuracies, but i think I nailed the overall look of the sword. Next project I will focus more on accuracy. So heres the pics.

She was really happy with it. Since the new season I can see a lot of the inaccuracies but I may resculpt in the future. Thanks for following along.

I'm going to do a sculpt. I may have a little better turn out. I can mold it and sell copies of my work. I will do a brass version.

Quick question, where do you get your blades fab'd at? I've been wanting to get some kunai I drew up in CAD fab'd for a while, but no machine shop wants to do it.
