Found Item - Kaylee's Strawberry Box - Firefly

Something caught my eye the other night as I was flipping through my Firefly Official Companion. It has some half decent caps of the box of Strawberries that Book hands to Kaylee that she subsequently takes tothe galley for the "how I wish I was a strawberry" scene... :D

I'm a long time Cigar smoker, and the box pretty quickly jumped out at me as a Cigar box of some sort. The caps in the Official Companion were not very good, so I grabbed them from my FF DVD set.

Apologies if the aspect ratio is a bit off in some shots...

The box is a Bahia Cigar box.

The printing on the lid of the box says...

Bahia
Trinidad

Tony Borhani (The creator of the Bahia cigar line)

As near as I can tell, the sides of the box just say Bahia with the Trinidad (or possibly Tony Borhani) subtext. There are no markings I can see that indicate the size of the cigar it once held, but based upon the size of the box in Book's hand, I think it must be Mini Corona, or Robusto. You can see that the box is short, and almost square.

Now, the problem is that all the Bahia cigar boxes I see online are of a different design. The one used in Firefly clearly has tongue in groove edges, whereas the newer boxes I see online do not.

I'm going to check a couple of local cigar shops as most of them sell empty cigar boxes. It would be a nice and cheap addition to a Firefly display to get one of these, and drop a couple of fake strawberries in it.

If anyone has a line on where to get the box, please let me know.

Yes, that helps a great deal, thanks. Now that I look at it, you can pretty clearly see where they weathered out the end of the box that showed the logo and probably the size of the cigar.

All the Bahia boxes I have found were newer style, and lacquered over. Gonna have to snag a box. It also helps that I've been partial to Nicaraguan seed tobacco for a long time, so I'll actually get some stogies I'll enjoy smoking out of the deal too.

Thanks.

I am glad I could help. :)

If you happen to find a way to get the boxes without the cigars for cheap let me know. ;)

There's a cigar shop near this great Italian restaurant that always sells the boxes. The wooden ones are usually $5. sometimes they are $1.

I'll keep an eye out and pick a few up if I can find that style.

Great find. This would be so shiny to display with the rest of my Firefly stuff, I just have to get myself one of these somehow.

Thanks for the stamp, I was missing that :)

I too got the peach colored ones on ebay and they convert just fine.

If you watch the show closely it looks like the lid was removed, flipped over and not re-attached. Which is exactly I what did to keep the logo on the top side after stripping the paint off.

So maybe even the one on the show was lacquered originally?

Maybe F-N-S will chime in, it was his theory :)

Just linking to the OTHER Strawberry box thread. :)

Re: Found Item - Kaylee's Strawberry Box - Firefly

You're welcome. :)
I just did a Google image search for 'postage stamp' and wallah!

Yeah, I could see while Book was holding the box that the lid looked detached. You can see the lid slip a bit when he picks it up off his pile of stuff.
It even looked like he reversed the box, presenting the rear of it to Kaylee when he opened it in front of her.
But despite 'canon', the attached lid just works better.

Re: Found Item - Kaylee's Strawberry Box - Firefly

Wow, the last post is years old in the thread..
I am working on making a screen accurate "Kaylee strawberry box" available as a mockup prop for collectors.
My questions are;
1. With or without strawberries (would everyone prefer finding their own to fill it?)
And,
2. loose fit lid, or hinged?
Yes, it seems the lid slips around in the show, but the box the studio used originally was hinged.
Any input here, or has this horse been beaten to death?
I have been looking for months for one to add to my collection, and decided to take matters into
my own hands then thought why not make them in quantity...
Thanks for your comments.
