My son has been getting into SG-1 and Atlnatis lately and I have been enjoying watching it with him. I forgot how cool some of the Jaffa headdress's looked. So I decided to start working on one.
The one I am doing first is the Hours guard (hawk) headdress.
Here is a picture of the templates I made for the first part of the head.
I made so many template pieces so I could the design on the head as symmetrical as possible.

And here is what I have in foam so far.

NICE! :thumbsup There need to be more stargate costumes out there. Are you making it full size for you or wearable for your son?

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Thanks. I am going for full size on this one. But without actualy measurements it will be as close to fullsize as possible.

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Thank you, its real simple. I just score the lines using a pencil or ballpoint pen.
I draw the lines lightly to make sure I have then correct then I go over a little heavier each time for 3-4 more times. Make sure when doing it you actualy score through the foam, you don not want to just push the foam down or eventualy the foam will rise and you will lose the deail. You want to actualy break the foam so the lines will always be there.

To get the lines as symmetrical as possible I made templates. Basically made two templates of each piece. The first template is kept simple for cutting out the main shape. The second template however I draw all the lines on and then cut along all the lines to make several tiny templates. Then laying those small templates one at a time on to the foam I draw around each one, then flip the template over and do the same on the other side.
Not sure I explained that well, I can take pics of the process later.

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Well the building has finished, now I just have to wait for warmer times so I can start painting.
I would like to thank JFcustom, who during this build released some pep SG-1 files. I was able to use 3 pieces from his pep file to help with some parts of mine. I also was able to redo some of his pieces to cut down on glue lines.
90 % of this build is my own templates with the other 10% being JFcustom's pep file and like I say they were a big help.
To get the detailing I used a pencil and scored the lines deep enough that they will show after painting. I also worked on both sides at once to get them as symmetrical as possible. For some areas I actually made templates of the pieces and cut the lines then traced the templates onto one piece then flipped the template over and did the same on the other side. I will post pictures of the technique soon. Oh and I did all the detailing before gluing the pieces together.
Comments always welcome (especially the good ones)..

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

That's gorgeous! I'm working on one myself, and yours is really an inspiration, well done!

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

This is amazing.... glad you posted it on JF's thread. I have been wanting to do the anubis one also and just keep finding other costumes to build. The details that you put on there I was going to try to use hot knife....but it looks so much cleaner and probably a lot steadier with your pen. :) I'm definitely saving this thread for when I build mine.

Must be an awesome feeling knowing how little you have wrapped into into this and it will look like a $500 head piece. Congrats on it before you even throw paint on it!

Re: Foam Jaffa Horus guard headdress.

Thanks man, I would definitely just use a pencil. I find it works great to get patterns down on foam. I used this method for the body paneling on my Foam R2-D2 aswell and it works perfectly. And like you said yes it is a lot steadier and cleaner.
