Flubber Unit

Ever since I saw Flubber as a kid I have wanted a replica of one of these. Couldn't figure it out then and still can't. Is it something that exists, based on something, or just built from scratch from a concept in someone's head? Any info would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Looks like a pressure pot of some kind to me. The gauge on top and the massive size of the hinge is a giveaway. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I'd start a search there.
