First time Costume Maker. Any advice, tips, or suggestions?

So, I've decided to make a costume, seeing as I'm going to be going to ConnectiCon this summer. I really want to do something Star Wars related, but I've never actually tackled a costume before so I'm quite unsure of what to do. Any advice or tips? Plus, I have one major issue, which is that I don't have a sewing machine. However, I do have skills with a simple needle and thread. So, any advice, tips, or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

1. Come up with a budget. What you may think is an inexpensive and simple costume will often times blow your budget out of the water.

2. Based upon on your budget choose a character (does not have to be gender based but helpful if you are trying to keep it real)

3. Collect as many reference pictures as you can of the character you want to costume. This is very helpful when you start looking at materials, props, etc. It will also help you determine number 4.

4. Choose whether you want to be screen accurate or "close enough." This will determine what you can use, buy, or make yourself. Remember that screen accurate tends to be more expensive than "close enough."

5. Once you pick the costume figure out what you can make vs. purchase. Making small parts of the costume is always fun and very gratifying. Purchasing other parts of the costume is fine especially depending upon your talents. Don't overspend though because you can kill your budget instantly.

6. Dig around in your closet, basement, garage, etc. and figure out if you already have parts and pieces to your costume already. That way all you have to do is modify those parts and pieces.

7. Start searching the web for people that have already completed the costume because they will be a cornucopia of help. Those people will have alot of helpful hints, tips, shortcuts, and cost saving techniques (unless they are going after screen accurate which means they may not have a budget.)

8. And finally...post your progress on your own thread here on RPF because watching a costume develop is fun to see and it also provides people to comment and provide tips, tricks, and secrets.

Good luck!!!!:love

Added: Check out some of the websites that are specific to the character you want to costume. Some great costuming websites for general information:

If purchasing an item it's always best to ask around as to whether or not it's a quality item. You can spend just as much money, or sometimes more, on inferior parts so take the time to look in to it. I'd hazard a guess that all of us who have been in this costuming world for awhile have been burned at least once, so try and learn from our mistakes. The information is out there.....you've just gotta look for it or ask.

Ya, get the heck out of this while you can. run... fast... sell your computer if ness. The rest of us will all have health problems related to chemical exposure of urethane rubber, plastics, glue fumes, not to mention all the mess it makes, and the clothes you ruin, the time you spend doing all this, and then the money you spend.... lol.. Then after you get your first piece done, you won't be satisfied, and you will want to do version 2, version 3. Then suddenly loose interest in star wars, and want an iron man suit, sell off the star wars stuff, and after you go through iron man, you'll have a brief encounter with batman, followed by Jack sparrow. lol..
no, just kidding. most important is have fun.

Check out second hand stores, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Craigslist, FleaBay (eBay), etc.

You will find alot of people selling sewing machines cuz they are broke too.

Also if you have a JoAnns close by to your town you can always take a sewing class form them.

I'll pitch in as someone new to costume/prop making something super important is PATIENCE! Cutting corners will usually lead to something you aren't happy with, take the time to do your research and do it right the first time. Some mistakes are unforeseen and part of the learning process, but rushing things will lead to problems down the road.

yeah, really first step I would suggest if you're planning on doing more than just this one costume, get a sewing machine. Sure you COULD sew everything by hand, but then you'll want to multiply your time to make the costume by at least 10 per item that needs to be sewn.
then after that, use the advice Capn_Jack_Savvy gave yah

these guys pretty well covered it! remember, measure twice, cut once. its easier to remove extra material VS trying to add it back! and have fun with it, no rushing.

oh yeah, and remember that you are going to make goofs. Hopefully they won't be big enough to make you have to start over, but when you do. Set it down, take a deep breath and calm down before trying to repair it. Otherwise you'll just make it worse, hehe. Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything :lol

Most important is if you can get reference pictures of the HERO costume with approximate and estimated scale you are set. Before that you will be in a heap of resizing issues!
