First Prop Build

Hey all, awesome site here.

I am brand new to the RPF and to prop building in general, I have always wanted to do something but have no idea where to start.

I am looking to do my first prop build but have no idea what I should start with, something simple of course but not sure what.

I tried my hand at a saber awhile ago but the dremel work was way beyond my skills for recreating a grafelx. I have never played with resin or casting but would love to learn...small scale to start...so many cool things to build.

I am fans of pretty much all Sci-Fi and Fantasy, Star Wars of course and a huge Dr. Who fan, I have a scarf my mother in law crochet from a pattern I found her.

Anyway, I'll stop babbling, any suggestions, advice, or anything would be awesome.

Thanks
Adrian

Get a Denix Mauser and some good parts. Solo blasters go together fairly quick.

RPF member Tim Allen makes a great 300 Helmet that you can finish in a weekend - trim and paint; boom you're done.

JP Velociraptor claw (Icons cast) is also a "paint and go" prop - no building required. Same with FC's training remote casts (if you can find one).

Why not look at the dollar store prop replica threads - and draw some inspriation there - a prop doesn't have to be 'screen accurate' it can be your take on an idea associated with a flick!

Buy some parts throw them together and see what you get, this will help you build your skill base as well before tackling something more detailed and true to the real prop you eventually decide upon.

Those are some great ideas...thanks all.

Between the mauser, graflex and dollar store prop ideas I should be able to find a decent starting point.

Grab a movie you like and watch it looking for something you like, that looks doable. Then go crazy. The dollar store can be a great place for chaep parts.

Thanks fuelish...

starting with my favorite movies is a good idea, I can make sure I build something that I will want on my shelf...unfortunately I have way to many movies I love...well I guess I will start with narrowing those down... :)

Thanks again all

The multipass kit i assembled was my first prop build. If you can put a model together you should be able to handle it. You can build it as a static prop and not worry about the lights/ switch stuff to make it easier. If you like Fifth Element that is.
